Fancy sharing your holiday with a red kite or two? You may very well get to see them up close at WithamCamp, as they nest in the surrounding woods. At 15 minutes’ drive from Frome in Somerset, this off-grid pop-up sits in a wildflower meadow surrounded by fields. Even better, there's just the one tent at this adults-only site, so you’ll have the place all to yourselves.
Accommodation is in a large bell tent nattily decked out with a double bed, a coffee table and lots of colourful soft furnishings to cosy the place up. A firepit, outdoor chairs and table are stored in the covered field shelter, which also has sofas and basic utensils but no stove – so if you’d like to cook, please bring your own stove with you. There’s a tap with cold water and a compost toilet tucked discreetly into a small copse of trees, but no showers or electricity.
Parking is on the verge outside the camping field unless conditions are very dry – only then is access allowed with a car. Dogs are not allowed as there are working farms and sustainably managed land close by – in fact, the Heal Somerset rewilding project is less than five minutes’ drive down the lane.
The local village of Witham Friary (10 minutes’ walk) has a traditional pub serving Somerset cider and Cheddar ales, and on alternate summer weekends, you can buy pizza or fish and chips from visiting food trucks. There is no local shop, but the supermarkets, organic grocers, pubs and wine bars of Frome should have you covered on all fronts.

- No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

- At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Local attractions
There are some big-hitting attractions to explore locally, starting perhaps with a day of animal encounters and driving safaris at Longleat (20 minutes by car), where you can get impressively close to lions, tigers and elephants. You can also easily spend a day touring the National Trust’s Stourhead (15 minutes), a splendid Palladian mansion with Henry Hoare-designed water gardens and a myriad of woodland glades to stroll.
The micro-city of Wells (35 minutes) also has much to offer in the shape of a flamboyant Gothic-era cathedral and the moated 13th-century Bishop’s Palace, while lovers of architecture will can tour ancient Roman baths and sweeping crescents of Georgian-era mansions in handsome Bath (45 minutes).
Happy to discover Somerset step by step? Walk up to Alfred’s Tower, a soaring folly built in 1722 and with sterling views stretching into Dorset and Wiltshire. You can also have a nose around The Deverills, a string of pretty villages set on quiet lanes surrounded by open farmland and wooded valleys.
