Which aspect of Devon will you explore on your next holiday to the south west: the rugged landscapes of Dartmoor National Park or the county’s spectacular coastline? No worries – staying at Modbury Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite means you don’t have to choose one over the other, because this peaceful site puts you within easy reach of both. With well-maintained grass and hardstanding pitches, the site is a five-minute drive from the ancient village of Modbury (which has a small supermarket and a pub serving food), and it welcomes families with kids and/or dogs – indeed, both have their own dedicated play area. The (children’s) playground has miniature adventure courses and a shaded bench from where parents can supervise proceedings. Within a 15-minute drive from the site, you could be hiking up to Western Beacon and other scenic points on the moors, or exploring the rockpools at Wyscombe Beach. And the South West Coast Path can be accessed from Felicity Bay (20 minutes’ drive), a sandy beach (on the River Avon) that is a popular spot with dog walkers. The site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club. It’s open to both members and non-members, with special rates available for members. Please note the price displayed is for members; non-members will need to select the £15 per night extra or buy a membership (which gives you discounted access to all Club sites for a year).

Route directions

Leave the A38 (Exeter–Plymouth) via the slip road onto the A3121 (signposted Ermington, Modbury, Yealmpton); at the top of the slip road, turn left (see Broad Park sign); after a mile, at the roundabout take the second exit into the road signposted Loddiswell (see Broad Park signpost; the road is narrow, with passing places). In about 2.5 miles, continue right just past California Cross onto the B3207 (signposted Modbury). The site is on the left after about a mile. Do not pull into Moor View Touring Park, which is about 0.5 mile before Broad Park. From Plymouth: Merge onto the Devon Expressway A38 – Exeter. Take the exit towards Avonwick. Turn right onto the B3372 and merge back onto the A38 – Plymouth. Take the first exit on the left to the A3121 (signposted Modbury). At the top of the slip road, take the left turn signposted Kingsbridge A3121 (signposted Broad Park). At the crossroads, go straight over (signposted Loddiswell; this is where there is about 2.5 miles of very narrow road with passing places). After California Cross, the road widens again; stay on this road and Modbury is about a mile further (signposted Broad Park).

Local attractions

With thrill rides, a toddlers’ zone, daily falconry displays and a farm zoo, Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes’ drive) ought to keep the kids entertained for a good few hours. The zoo runs meet-and-greet sessions with reptiles, ferrets and guinea pigs, or you can just observe the curious antics of the resident meerkats, otters and wallabies. A day in Plymouth (35 minutes) might include a visit to the National Marine Aquarium, with its underwater tunnels and experiences such as snorkel safaris, or to the Mayflower Museum, which illustrates the Pilgrims’ 1620 voyage to the New World. Or you could climb to the top of Smeaton’s Tower, a lighthouse with expansive views of the city and Plymouth Sound. Paignton (40 minutes) has a sandy beach and a Victorian pier with a dinosaur-themed miniature golf course at the end. The South West Coast Path winds its way around the gardens of Roundham Head, leading to Goodrington Beach and the Splashdown Quaywest waterpark.
