Wingz and Thingz… and a side of hoofz? That would seem appropriate, given that accommodation at this Cornish place is in a converted horsebox. However, there are no equines on site, and it’s more a case of parrots and cockatoos (representing Team Wingz) and wallabies and raccoons (for Team Thingz). These beasties used to be part of a larger menagerie (the site was a former animal sanctuary), and they now live their lives happily roaming in their enclosure. Wallaby food is included in the rate, so you can make friends with them.
A cosy spot for couples, the horsebox comes with a double bed, a kettle, a fridge and a welcome hamper (including all you need for a Cornish cream tea). There’s a separate shower room (of which you have exclusive use) and an outdoor kitchen for those who wish to prepare their own meals. Those who would rather eat out can head to Par village or St Blazey (both five minutes’ drive) for fish and chips, a Chinese takeaway or pub fare.
In addition to scenic countryside walks – including wooded waterside trails at Tywardreath Marsh Nature Reserve (five minutes) – you’re tantalisingly close to the South West Coast Path here, which you can access directly from Par… provided you don’t get lured by the golden sands of Par Beach and decide to take it easy, just relaxing and swimming in sheltered St Austell Bay.

- The campground/park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.
- Bookings must not consist of more than 1 different households.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
- No gas barbecues allowed.
- No electric barbecues allowed.
- The charging of electric vehicles is not permitted on site.

Local attractions
With massive biomes recreating different habitats (the Mediterranean and a tropical rainforest), the Eden Project (10 minutes’ drive) runs a lively programme of events – from art and photography exhibitions to live music concerts. There are also zipwire flights over the distinctive biomes, an aerial walkway and a colourful outdoor garden.
Check out the elegant tall ships at tiny but historic Charlestown Harbour, on the bay of Saint Austell (15 minutes), which dates back from the late 18th century. If you’re in luck, you might catch a period drama being filmed here; if not, you can still take in spectacular views of the Cornish coast.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour) was an overgrown Victorian garden when it was rediscovered about 30 years ago. After meticulous restoration, it now houses an outdoor tropical jungle, areas of woodland and a kitchen garden.
