What’s better than camping in the South Downs National Park? Camping holidays in the South Downs National Park with a quirky 17th-century inn attached, that’s what. And what’s more, one serving delicious food and fine ales and welcoming you in with a sea of friendly faces. Tucked behind this popular and storied pub, the pop-up Camp Whichway @ The Pub With No Name sits on a plateau about 800ft above sea level and at the meeting point of three parishes steeped in history. You can get your feet under the table in the bar every night, freeing up plenty of time for you, the kids and any dogs to explore the fertile farmland and undulating chalk downlands of the national park by day. The level site has generous grassy pitches in a flower-filled meadow staggering distance from the pub. There are flushing loos and hot showers in the timber-clad facilities block, plus refuse disposal and a washing-up area close by. Guests have instant access to ambles – from canvas to countryside if you like – under mature trees, as well as stunning sunsets and star-filled skies on clear nights. Miles from anywhere, the rural location of the site is both a blessing and a curse. Peaceful it may be, but its seclusion sometimes comes at a cost in the guise of intermittent low water pressure, slow-draining shower trays and hubbub from the occasional event at the pub.
