  • Spacious family-friendly site with shop in the High Weald
  • Five minutes to Northiam shops, pub, steam railway; 10 to river walks
  • Rye 15 minutes; Hastings beach half an hour; Leeds Castle 45 minutes
Not a lot of people can tell you where the High Weald is… and maybe it'll stay that way: this borderland between Kent and East Sussex hasn’t changed much since medieval times. It’s still green (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in fact), and still the same patchwork of wooded hills, scattered smallholdings and Saxon pathways that it was half a millennium back. Rother Valley Caravan and Camping Park occupies a prime bit of this lush Sussex landscape, five minutes’ drive from the village of Northiam. It’s a spacious park where you can hang out with like-minded souls or seek seclusion in the woods behind. There’s a playground on site, woods to build dens in, and a middle meadow kept empty so there’s ample room for running around, re-enacting World Cup victories and general rolling in the grass. For eats, hire a firepit and cook up a feast; buy snacks, ice creams and basic supplies from the little shop, or head into Northiam for eats, treats and the fine old pub. Then go adventuring… a couple of minutes’ walk and you’ve gone back a century: Northiam is a stop on the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway, so you can chuff your way to Tenterden (15 minutes’ drive) or just do a bit of trainspotting while you lounge around site.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Simple site with good clean facilities. Staff seemed to be friendly and helpful. Next to a heritage railway with steam trains running (occasionally) past the site and its Northiam stop two minutes away. We took the train to Bodiam and back which was fun.

Disliked Looks a tad shabby as you drive in, so very first impressions could be better, but once in it’s quite presentable.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Easy going, available and flexible hosts. Allowed us to change pitches due to a number of rabbit holes in the initial pitch. Clean loos and showers. Sunset from far side of campsite over vintage train line.

Disliked Felt a bit derelict and rundown in arrival. At £30 per night it felt a lot, for what we got. It’s great for parent and kids, the kids can play football in the middle of the camping field, complete with two goals - and run wild all day. not great if if you don’t want to be woken up by the thuds of footballs at 830am. 4 tents of (soon to be) drunken teenagers arrived at 930pm who progressively got louder and more annoying as the night wore on… also no barrier on arrival/exit so security could be an issue.

Good site for visiting Bodiam castle or Hastings

Unpowered grass site

Liked The area very good for exploring the coast and countryside, you pitch basically around the edge of the site or in the woods, it has a children’s playground and the centre is kept free for children’s games ie: football tennis cricket etc.
Toilets and showers clean, washing up area very good.

Disliked Even though the toilets and showers are clean you have to time it right as always a queue.
On the campsites information it states groups are welcome, however that creates noise, we had a group of boys who were loud in every way, then on the last night tents pitching together, loud music stopped about 11pm but as they had turned themselves into a large gathering the voices were loud up to about 12-30pm
So just be warned regarding groups and camping in tents with young children (noise travels)

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (woodland)

Liked Lovely site, huge open expanse of grass for kids to play, brilliant play park, toilets and showers were immaculate and they even provided washing up liquid at the dish washing sinks. The managers were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. We were holidaying with our son, his 3 young children and his partner. They travelled from France, we travelled from Shropshire. They arrived early hours of the morning on a Sunday whilst we arrived late Saturday evening. It was a superb pitch in a clearing in woodland. Our grandchildren loved it. Lots to visit in the area without travelling too far and a superb opportunity to just chill and relax on the site. Thank you for a lovely holiday

Disliked Not really a criticism but it would be nice if there was an additional toilet/shower block nearer the woodland pitches! It wasn’t an issue because I drove the car there since I am a bit lazy and don’t like walking too far!

This was my first time staying at an organised place to pitch…

Unpowered grass site

Liked This was my first time staying at an organised place to pitch up my tent. It was very friendly and the bathroom and shower facilities were very clean. We had plenty of space for my large tent and the other guests were helpful too. We could park our car next to the tent.

Disliked Can’t think of anything to add.

Local attractions

Fittingly for this ancient enclave, there are loads of cracking castles to explore. 14th-century Bodiam (15 minutes' drive) is such a castle-like castle that you’d think they made it in Hollywood: ascend the windy stairs of the gatehouse to visit south-east England’s largest colony of bats. Leeds Castle (45 minutes) has a maze and adventure playground, 500 acres of gardens and a falconry centre. If water’s your element, Bewl Water (half an hour) is where you go for fishing and boating (and bike trails thereabouts). Closer by, Bodiam Boating Station (10 minutes) has a range of aquatic activities on the Rother, including walks along and boat cruises down it. Like most rivers, the Rother ends up eventually at the sea, but you can be there quicker, building sandcastles and eating candy floss at Hastings in half an hour. Nature spotters have 17 wildlife reserves in the High Weald to choose from; the one at Bedgebury Wood (half an hour) scores high for its zipwires and high ropes. If you prefer feet planted firmly on the ground, make sure you take a ramble round Rye (15 minutes), a hilltop town of half-timbered houses and crooked lanes topped off by yet another castle.
