Sunny afternoon, by the beck
Fabulous location, kitted out with a king size bed - 2 additional camp beds available by request
Alders edge, pitched next to the trickling beck

  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away
Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy. This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass. Both make an excellent choice if you've already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. If you'd rather head out, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

What customers say

Gorgeous, tranquil spot with heaps of space, a ripper stream for the kids, and super friendly hosts. Toilets and showers are spotless. Access tracks can be a bit rough, showers a bit temp-y, and sometimes noisy campers, but most reckon it’s a cracker holiday.

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked The campsite is in a beautiful location and the facilities were clean, which is why I’m giving 2 stars rather than 1.

Disliked However, our stay was badly let down by poor management and inadequate facilities for the size of the site.

For the entire main tent field, there were only 2 sinks with 1 shared tap for everything — washing up, hand washing after using the toilets, brushing teeth, etc. There was no hot water, and it simply wasn’t enough for the number of campers.

The biggest issue, though, was noise and lack of enforcement of campsite rules. The owners allowed a large group (around 8 tents) who were effectively having a party all weekend — drinking heavily, blasting music, shouting and singing. We arrived around 5pm and the noise continued until after midnight. I messaged the host at 11pm and was told they would speak to the group the following day, although they said it was difficult when people deliberately ignored the rules.

Unfortunately, the second night was exactly the same. By around 8pm they returned with an entire wheelbarrow full of beer, followed by more loud music and shouting until after midnight, plus the sound of people being sick through the night. In my view, the campsite should never have accepted such a large party-style booking, and once they had been informed of the problem, they should have been actively monitoring the situation the following evening. We returned to the campsite at 7pm on night two and did not see the owners come down once.

To make matters worse, when we arrived back on the second evening, another tent had been set up on our pitch, and its occupants were smoking weed.

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
With regard to the lack of taps, it looks like you only found one water tap, we do have 5 on site, this is usually enough for the tents & guests we have visiting, I'm sorry you didn't find these.
Washing up bowls are provided.
With regard to the large party, I was not happy with the way they behaved, I was at the campsite a number of times during the day & loud music only featured once, when asked to turn it down they did, however, lots of talking laughing & children having a fabulous time also featured strongly.
In hindsight I should have asked them to leave after the first night, but after talking to other campers who had been on site that evening, I felt on balance they deserved a chance.
The text you sent, was received at 5:30 am, although it was sent at 11:59pm, so the time had passed that evening to make a difference, I spoke to them the following morning & I was assured there would be no repeat.
We expect noise levels to reduce on site by 9-9:30pm, if I am telephoned at that time you can be assured someone will visit the site to sort out any issues. - I am much happier to have a wasted journey rather than guests who do not enjoy their stay.

I am sorry we didn't meet you during your stay, it is unusual, we are a small family run site & this has to fit in with our dairy farm, although I do try and be at the site when needed, our calves, cows & sheep also need to be attended to, we just try to do our best & be fair to all, once again I am sorry we didn't meet your expectations.

We have zero tolerance of drugs.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, lovely to hear you would like to stay again. I am sorry the shower didn't work, despite Robins best efforts he only managed to get it going on your last day. I hope you managed a warm shower in the toilet block. Thank you again & good to meet you.

By the Beck unpowered grass tent site (private bathroom amenities)

Liked The location was beautiful, particularly loved the river/stream for the kids to play in. Owners were lovely and helpful too.

Disliked Paid for a riverside spot with own compost toilet and shower. Turned out to be a bucket toilet with a compostable bag and the shower was cold. As a seasoned camper, we’ve stayed from the most basic sites to the most luxurious. At the owners own admission this is very basic, but I was still surprised at just how basic the private toilet facilities were. For the most part we used the other showers/toilets, as though still basic the showers were warm. Also to note, the hill from car park to pitches is not for the faint hearted (though owners will help with their vehicles).

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed the location and were happy with your pitch right next to the stream, your children looked like they were having a great time, I am sorry, your showers should have been warm, I understand they were repaired during your stay. We do have enough flushing toilets on site to accommodate up to 30 pitches, so we find most campers prefer to use these, but the camping toilets provided are useful if children need to visit during the night.

Great choice for a beautiful campsite.

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked Beautiful site, next to a cliff and a river. Warm showers, well thought out facilities. Shirley was very helpful, her advice really improved our local experiences.

Much prefer leaving the cars away from the campsite. We don't want to camp in a carpark.

The Plough does some great grub, if you're flush. Walk recommended (boots).

Firepits in the eve were ace.

Alders Edge bell tent

Liked We really enjoyed our stay here everything we needed was there towels bedding , cooking equipment , big bag of wood we stayed in the tent nearest to the car park this was right by the stream so peaceful and there was plenty in f space between others who was camping didn’t want to come home plenty of space for the kids to play the shower and compost toilets were really cleaned they cleaned them twice a day and really powerful shower also mattress on double bed was so comfortable we can’t wait to return.

Disliked The camping bed camping mattress’s was very thin so luckily enough there was only 3 of us and we could use the other mattress to double up as it would have been a really uncomfortable sleep.

Route directions

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
