General
- Tent campsite on the western edge of historic Hadrian's Wall
- Forty minutes' drive from the Lake District and 20 from Carlisle
- Licensed tearoom on site
Make like a certain Roman and make for a grand adventure in the north of England... and with the added grand addition of a tearoom too.
Yep, you're off to Hadrian's Wall, the world-famed 73-mile wall running along northern England that was built by the eponymous emperor around 22 AD. And on its western edge at Bowness-on-Solway is the quiet family site of Wallsend Guest House and Glamping Pods, a fully-licensed and well-equipped base a short stroll from the edge of the wall.
Fret not though if you're not an ancient Rome aficionado as there's stacks of other stuff to do around here: Solway is in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; RSPB Campfield Marsh is within a couple of miles of the site, and tiptop walking and cycling trails are all around. For adventures further afield, Carlisle is 20 minutes' drive away and the Lake District within 35.
The site welcomes hikers and cyclists, and can sort secure storage for bikes. After a morning roaming about, guests can have a restful afternoon in the licensed tearoom, or pick up a sandwich to set off out again for a picnic. Packed lunches are available on request.
Amenities include shower and toilet facilities with hot water included; heated bathrooms with hairdryers; an electric vehicle charging point; a washing-up area, and an outdoor stand pipe and dog-wash area. A washing machine is available for an extra charge.
The nearest village shop is four miles away, and the nearest supermarkets, banks and chemist are in Wigton, nine miles from the site.

Local attractions
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian's Wall is home to several fab and famed Roman Britain attractions including Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda, each just over an hour's drive from the start of the wall but well worth a day trip.
Staying close to home, the first section of the wall from its western end is the 15.5-mile trek from Bowness to Carlisle passing Drumburgh Castle and Burgh-by-Sands. The start of the walk around Bowness is top birdwatching land too: look out for oystercatchers, plovers, redshanks and loads more around the dunes, peats and marshes of the Bowness sands.
More nature spotting is at RSPB Campfield Marsh, five minutes' drive from the site (or easily reached by foot or bike). Species to spot include wading birds, dragonflies, geese and snipe; the reserve also has nature trails, a viewpoint, a play area and a visitor centre.
