What customers say

Peaceful spot near fells & lakes, praised for its chill vibes and top owner. Facilities are clean, if a bit old-school (hot showers are a win!). Spacious, good-value sites, though a few folks copped some noise.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Good camp site for price, washing areas all cleaned down daily. Areas good size. Really good location for walking areas.

Disliked When you arrive there is a number to ring however no one answers- someone already on the camp site helped us out.
People arriving and pitching up well after 11pm- it is just slightly frustrating when someone is so noisy right next to your tent - this then disturbs the dog which disturbs other people, this could be monitored more to an area to pitch up if you are going to be late. This happened two nights.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked What I really liked about this campsite was the very relaxed atmosphere. It’s mostly used by families, which made it feel calm and welcoming. The surroundings are beautiful, and the quiet nights with open skies were truly wonderful.

Disliked What I didn’t like, however, was the state of the facilities. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough toilets and showers for the number of people staying on site. The cleanliness and standards of the toilets also need improvement, as they feel outdated and in need of refurbishment. In addition, hygiene levels are quite low, and the facilities should really be cleaned more frequently—not just once a day.

Liked Lovely location. The wash up facilities and toilets were conveniently located near to the main pitches.

Disliked I thought that the owner was fairly unhelpful when we spoke to them about where to pitch, didn't give any information about the pitches and we had to ask where things were. Seemed quite overcrowded with some pitches, especially for the smaller tents, being very close together. For the size of the campsite, I thought the toilets/shower numbers were on the small size.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked I really liked the location, Lorton is a lovely little village ideally located for accessing the western lakes. The site was nicely sheltered and the tent survived Storm Floris with only one guy rope snapping!

Disliked There were days when the toilet role ran out and one of the male showers was faulty but it was ok because I like a cold shower!

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire. On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as its more central counterparts, with activities such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass. Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as England's only true mountain forest. It's one of the Super 6 mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre. Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path. And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
