  • Family-owned wild camping site eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne
  • A 10-minute drive from Metrocentre; 30 minutes from Derwent Reservoir
  • Barbecues and dogs permitted; small woodland area; pubs nearby
Whether it’s tracing Hadrian’s Wall, clip and climbing at a local entertainment complex or windsurfing and open-water swimming around a reservoir, you’ll be able to pack together a pretty dandy break from Stampley Moss Farm. Eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, the city lights are just 20 minutes’ drive away, but water-based relaxation is also within reach, whether at the coast (35 minutes’ drive) or Derwent Reservoir (half an hour). Four-legged friends are welcome on a lead here and they’ll have a small private forest to stretch their legs. The woodlands circle the pop-up pitches, where it’s fully wild with no electricity and no facilities other than a portable toilet and cold tap (although you’ll be welcome to get a toasty vibe going with a barbecue). There’s a pile of chopped firewood in the field to help yourself to if you'd like to make a firepit (just be careful with the fire). The family-owned farm is friendly, that’s for sure, so once you’re all settled in, you’ll be ready to brace for take-off. Those of you who are after a foodie plunge first will find pubs and restaurants within five minutes’ drive of the site. And when you’re ready to march off into the horizon in search of wildlife, there are red kite zones locally or the river Derwent’s under half an hour’s walk away. With Gateshead’s Metrocentre 10 minutes’ drive away too, you’ll really be in a prime spot for a shop-till-you-drop afternoon or perhaps a clip and climb, cinema or miniature golf showdown. There's a lovely pond on site with ducks and geese, so guests should keep children safe and away from the pond. Also, take note that the security gate is locked at 10pm, so it's not possible to enter or exit after this time. If there's space left over, you are welcome to park your car on your pitch.

What customers say

A ripper wild camping spot! Loved the country vibe & close to town. Friendly owners, secure entry, campfires & BBQs welcome. Basic loos & bins were fine for the price. A few noted tough ground & messy bins, but heaps of space & chill atmosphere. Will def be back!

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Travelled with my husband and 2 children (7 and 11). The location was excellent, feels like you're in the middle of nowhere however, local amenities are just a 5 minute drive away. There is plenty of space for the children to run around and they had a great time collecting wood (already chopped) for the fire. There are animals roaming, my girls really liked to watch the peacock. The highlight of the trip was my daughters getting to see and interact with the horses. Although these are personal horses and this is not part of the camping experience, Louise and her daughter Anya were really welcoming and allowed my girls to have a small ride around the paddock. I would definitely recommend this site for a family friendly off grid experience.

From the manager: Hi sorry you did not enjoy the wild camp. There is no facilities as clearly stated on the wild camping listing. There is a tap . You were sent a text message on Thursday prior to your check in on Friday which unfortunately you didn’t read by driving to the wrong place .
“Please close the double wooden gates (please close after you as we have several dogs)…..
Please don't approach the house as there are a number of dogs just text or call & we will come no problem  … Theres a water tap behind the riding arena. Just text if you would like  to drink bottle water and we will bring some but there is a tap cold water hose…”

We could have brought you bottled water as much as you liked & by not closing the gate Laura likes to visit people & in the main most repeat guests love Laura she’s a very quiet little dog who has had a very sad life. She’s most certainly not a stray & most enjoy seeing her .
Sorry you didn’t enjoy the wild camp

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked The site grounds were spacious and the ability to pitch wherever was nice.

Disliked Lack of ANY facilities. There was one portaloo available for a full campsite that was quickly made dirty and unsanitary, the views were poor as it was in the middle of what felt like someones back garden with a horse training school and powerlines right through the center.

The clientele that this site draws was also dissaponting. Many families letting their kids and dogs run around uncontrolled. Very unsafe given the multiple lit firepits.
Adults getting very drunk and having arguments at 0100 in the morning.
Myself and friend were approached and asked to call the police at one point.
No light or noise control was put in place so trying to sleep with music and loud shouting was impossible.

£20 a night for what essentially was a patch of very uneven, sloped grass with no real toilet or washing up facilities.

From the manager: Unfortunately the family concerned were incredibly badly behaved and were reported to pitch up & I text them my infuriation being woken up myself at 2:10am by them. Which I’m sure you’ll understand is very frustrating for me to having received only £17 to host such people. This is a wild camping field as well described . The portaloo is cleaned every day by me and serviced professionally every Tuesday . Sorry about the awful behaviour of others .

Highly recommend for all ages if you enjoy wild camping!

Liked We loved everything! We stayed for two nights, it was gorgeous and we had a brilliant time with perfect weather. We'll definitely be back next year!

From the manager: Thank you very much for your review . Glad you had a relaxing time and very sorry others on the field didn’t follow the rules/texted to them.

Local attractions

What was life like in past times around here? Well, for a whizz back to the Roman era, Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 minutes’ drive) and Corbridge Roman Town (25 minutes) are both a short drive away, where you’ll get to see excavation collections, Roman armour and trinkets, as well as the remains of the 73-mile Roman wall. The 1820s to the 1950s are in focus at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (20 minutes). This place is an open-air museum, so you’ll get to join in with activities here or just have a look around. There are old colliery railway tracks for walking and cycling at Chopwell Woodland Park (10 minutes) but Go Ape Matfen takes things to the treetops (25 minutes) for more daring obstacle courses and zipwires. Water’s surely got to feature in your break too, as the coast is just over half an hour’s drive away. At Seaham beach (35 minutes), perhaps you’ll want to search for sea glass or pull out all the stops for a picnic on the shore, followed by a pretty promenade walk. Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) is another place that's all about the water, whether it’s fishing lessons, open-water swimming, sailing or windsurfing.
