Weardale Retreat shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked Everything!
The shepherd's hut was set up perfectly. It was a wonderful way to end our holiday.
And there was lots of little personal extras that just made it all that more special.
There was a BBQ instead of a hob/oven but there was also a toaster, electric egg boiler, microwave and coffee machine.
The woodfired hot tub was a lovely way to relax in the evening. It's definitely on my wish list now! 😊
And then of course you have the open fire outside (with marshmallows courtesy of our lovely host Carol).
I can't recommend this place enough. We will be back...

Disliked Having to leave and go back to work!! 😁

Weardale Retreat shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked The accommodation was really comfortable and well put together. We had stacks of extras that made our stay wonderful. We had everything we needed and more. The location is idyllic, peaceful and secluded. The family were very welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed being surrounded by the farm and the animals. We’d definitely stay again. Wonderfully relaxing.

Weardale Retreat shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked This was a gem of a retreat- the shepherds hut was beautiful- really thoughtfully equipped with everything we could possibly need- including local products, including burgers and sausages, eggs and cheese.
The location is spectacular an uninterrupted view across the Dale, with incredible views in every direction, and some very friendly sheep. The site is set in its own space making it really private. The wood fired hot tub was just brilliant- easy to use and plenty of wood available. There was a bbq and also a fire pit, which made fora cosy evening under the stars. The newly mown path to the hut had solar lighting, and part of the space was left wild so there were lots of insects and birds. We would thoroughly recommend visiting, and intend to go back to explore the area in foot. We had our Labrador with us, and she had her own special welcome with a dog blanket, and a bag of treats. And It’s only 30 minutes into Durham.

Weardale Retreat shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked Excellent set up, owners have thought of everything to make your stay relaxing as possible, from the little cart to transport your gear to the hut to the bag of marshmallows for the wood pit. No problems what so ever. Definitely recommend this but to anyone looking for a peaceful few days or a location to do some walking in the Durham Dales.

Local attractions

Recommended areas to roam in the local area include the high wild fells of Weardale and Teesdale. Get your hiking boots muddy in these parts of the Pennines, then swap them for clean shoes for strolls around the smart centre of Durham (half an hour). This university city has a cathedral and castle to check out in the centre, but is also a top-notch spot for just meandering around the medieval streets. Travel to the Killhope Lead Mining Museum (half an hour) to learn how the county got its riches in the 19th century and, once you’re back above ground, follow the nature trail in search of red squirrels. Another intriguing place to visit is the Bowes Museum (35 minutes) for its selection of fine and decorative arts sourced from all across Europe. While the displays are generally aimed at adults, kids are also welcome – activities for young art aficionados are often organised here. A spot that’s perhaps more suitable for small fry is Diggerland Durham (half an hour), an adventure park that allows visitors to drive real machinery.
