What customers say

Great campsite with friendly staff, stunning views & spotless amenities. Cosy, well-equipped digs with thoughtful extras. Perfect base for exploring. Minor shower temp/Wi-Fi hiccups noted, but largely top marks for a chill, memorable break.

Camping cabin

Liked This is a friendly, clean, safe and well-organised site. The pod was really comfortable, warm and even had tea and coffee. The shower / toilet block is in excellent condition and the separate washing up room with hot water even had a chest freezer. We were spoiled with brilliant weather so it gave us wonderful views and nearby walks.

Glamper camping pod

Liked Very clean and looked after facilities. The pod itself was well looked after and spotlessly clean. Freindly welcome from the lady on arrival. Only stayed one night, but enjoyed our stay. We will definitely return again.

Disliked Not a dislike or complaint, but to top this site off, a little childrens play area would be nice for younger children. But would this make the site less peaceful?

Camping cabin

Liked The family that run the site are lovely and welcoming. Ernest’s retreat has a relaxed feel and it’s a great place. Shower and toilet block was clean. Loved the ability to get a pizza on site too. Hopefully we’ll be back again one day!

Rambler camping pod

Liked A lovely scenic location, great view. Comfortable wooden camping pod. Clean toilet and shower facilities. Really hot showers. Friendly helpful staff. I thought pitch.up.com said no campfires, but you are allowed a fire as long as it is in a fireplace off the ground. Firepits and wood available to buy on-site.

Local attractions

Exploration of the Peak District doesn’t have to mean pulling on those walking boots, slapping on a helmet or doing your best Toad of Toad Hall impressions in a classic car – you can also have an altogether more sedate experience, with fishing and golf five minutes from Ernest’s Retreat or a saunter around the banks of Ladybower Reservoir, 40 minutes away. If you’ve already put the splendour of Chatsworth, Haddon and Hardwick stately manors on your list, now add the 25-minute trip to Bolsover Castle, a fortified retreat with a reputation for revelry. Tread lightly, though – they say it’s haunted, and you don’t want to anger anything lying dormant… If the kids haven’t hit those Jane Austen literary peaks yet, they may need something more than Pride and Prejudice vibes to keep them entertained. Luckily, the kid-friendly Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park is only 15 minutes away and the entire family can head to Alton Towers, just under an hour from Ernest’s, for an adrenaline spike.
