If you’re into your outdoorsy activities, you might just want to plan (at least) two visits to Camping Tunnel International, in the Aosta Valley village of Etroubles. The reason? This site at 1280 metres above sea level is well-placed for all sorts of fresh-air antics in both winter and summer. Access to the site is straightforward all year round, as it’s on the Gran San Bernardo road linking Italy and Switzerland. Getting out again on foot is pretty simple too: the Via Francigena ancient pilgrimage route passes nearby, and there are plenty of other hiking options close by. Guides and maps are available on site to give you ideas and help keep you on track. If you’re here in the winter months, hail the ski bus close by to get you up to the slopes. In between outings, downtime can be spent on site chilling out with TV time, books or games in the communal lounge, playing table tennis or watching over the bambini in the playground. Summer visitors can also use the open-air swimming pool (8 x 4 metres) and kids’ pool, or use the site’s barbecues and gazebos for alfresco cooking. With mountain peaks rising up to 3,000 metres all around, a bit of time admiring the scenery might not go amiss, either… The site’s handy location on the edge of the village means that bars, restaurants and shops are all a mere few minutes away on foot. Over the summer and through the Christmas holidays, guests can also meet at the bar for breakfast, a sandwich or an excellent spritz.

喜欢: Very nice area, the hosts were very welcoming, nice hot showers , site is located just a short walk to the village which is beautiful.

不喜欢: L’eau froide dans les sanitaires, le bruit permanent pendant tout le séjour (tournoi de foot juste en dessous du camping durant les 3 jours + circulation très intense)

喜欢: Lovely campsite but smaller than we thought, the staff were friendly and helpful. We loved the town so we decided to stay another night.

不喜欢: Pitch was difficult to access with a motorhome, only because we were on an upper level.

喜欢: Friendly welcome. Nice location.

不喜欢: No toilet rolls! Need to wear a swimming hat in the pool (I now understand that is some what of the norm in Italy). Next they’ll want me to wear speedos!

喜欢: Perfect location. Located in the village of Etroubles. Facilities were immaculate. This campsite provides individual pitches with plenty of space. Located in the mountains; where the views are spectacular. There are lots of walks close by and a bus stop 2 minutes walk away, where you can get into the local town of Aosta, which is worth a visit. The staff are friendly and speak a range of languages, making communication easy. There is also a bar, swimming pool and Carrefour shop on the campsite.

喜欢: Molto ordinato e pulito, ben attrezzato, silenzioso, in bella posizione. Gestori molto simpatici e disponibili. Un bel posto che può fare da base per escursioni ma anche per godersi qualche giorno di relax. Una nota: forse le colonnine dell'elettrecità sono un po' distanti tra loro, il nostro cavo questa volta non arrivava per un paio di metri e i gestori ci hanno prestato una prolunga.

For a little look at the area’s history, walk to the open-air museum in the village of Etroubles (five minutes' walk) or visit the centre of Aosta (25 minutes' drive), an important city with Roman remains and other attractions. Beyond that, it’s worth paying a visit to medieval Fenis Castle (half an hour) and Forte di Bard (45 minutes), a riverside fortress with interactive exhibits for the tiddlers. Prefer to keep things as active as possible? There are trekking, mountain biking and e-biking routes directly from the site and winter, the area's a haven for skiing or mountaineering. Sign up for a heart-pumping rafting day on the Dora River (half an hour’s drive). Winter guests might like to take the ski bus up to the slopes of Crevacol (15 minutes) or try out different ways of getting about on snow at the Flassin Snow Park (10 minutes), where there’s also a good collection of stuff for the kids. Elsewhere nearby are family-friendly days out among the Alpine creatures at Parc Animalier d’Introd (35 minutes) and chances to view all the stunning scenery from on high with a ride on the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car (50 minutes).
