It’s all about finding a bit of rural relaxation at La Billardière – Audrey and Yann have set up their Lower Normandy site to welcome guests to a peaceful spot with just enough facilities to make things comfortable (without distracting from the calm of the countryside). Come along to this small farm site just outside Le Ménil-Ciboult and you’ll be sharing the space with the residents that call this place home all year round – including goats, sheep, chickens, donkeys, dogs and cats. They’re a friendly bunch, and cute too – if you’re here at the right time you may be able to join in with bottle-feeding lambs. As this is primarily a home for the animals, the site owners have chosen to keep visitor facilities to a minimum, but you’ll have access to compost toilets, a barbecue area and a dog exercise area where your four-legged friends can have a bit of a run around. The nearest supermarket for your barbecue/picnic supplies is five minutes’ drive away in Tinchebray-Bocage, but you can make life even simpler by including breakfast with your booking (delivered fresh to you each morning). There’s also coffee available on site in the mornings to give you a good kickstart. How might you fill your days around here when not fussing over the animals? Well, perhaps a waterfall walk, a château visit or one of the family-friendly adventure activities available nearby? And for those of you who’ve never been before, an outing to Mont Saint-Michel (about an hour’s drive away) should certainly be on the cards…

喜欢: The donkeys. The dogs (very friendly). The goats and sheep! Lovely couple who were very helpful and it was lovely seeing all the animals. The three dogs were great and loved the attention.

喜欢: easy access well sign posted. ideal location for shops and local village.

不喜欢: only slight gripe is the ignorance of some people walking through the pitches instead of keeping to the walkways.

喜欢: Lovely farm campsite. Very friendly owners and got to meet all the animals. Only issues were due to recent poor weather and the owners did all they could to make our stay the best possible. Would definitely recommend!

喜欢: Nice little farm with friendly donkeys and dogs. The weather was poor and the ground was muddy, but the owner was very helpful and provided us with everything we needed.

Decided to see a bit more of your rural surroundings? You can do so at a leisurely pace with a stroll around the waterfalls in Mortain (20 minutes’ drive), or at rather higher speed with an adventurous downhill ride at Normandie Luge (half an hour). If that’s got your taste for adrenaline going, there are more exciting antics to get stuck into (ziplines, treetop courses and bungee jumping) at AJ Hackett Normandie adventure park (35 minutes). Back down at ground level, slow the pace with a trip to the Musée régional de la poterie (10 minutes) or a wander around the ruins of Château de Domfront (25 minutes). If such things aren;t a hit with the kids, try The Enchanted Village amusement park (20 minutes) instead, or head over to Zoo de Champrépus (45 minutes). The big draw around these parts, however, has to be Mont Saint-Michel (an hour) – the towering abbey on an offshore island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of France’s most-visited attractions. In summer it stays open until midnight and makes a fine sunset trip.
