Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset. Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them. Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze. Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

喜欢: Shower block and toilet block were very clean and well kept. The pitches were brilliantly spaced and looked after. We had a really lovely stay, and thought it was a brilliant stay. We were also lucky enough to get a pizza from the pizza truck which was a very well needed treat.

喜欢: Relaxed atmosphere, clean toilets, could borrow fire pits, pizza van onsite at weekends.

不喜欢: Bit disorganised allocation of pitches. We stayed 2 nights and when we came back after day out someone had taken our previously assigned pitch so had to change. Showers with only shower curtains and a communal area was a bit awkward.

不喜欢: Noise (huge group 25+ people , music playing constantly) Toilet hand dryer placed outside so very loud if you are camping in the field opposite. Communal shower changing area

喜欢: Facilities were good, toilets and showers clean, good washing up area, staff were friendly and helpful, allowed fire pits (they even provide them and bag of logs for £10), our daughter (8) loved riding her bike round

不喜欢: Uneven pitch which sadly due to rainfall was very muddy (Dave did tell us pick was not the best but we were late to site and was full!), no shop and was not close to town), poss need some kind of information board showing nearby facilities

喜欢: Loved the fire pits ! The campsite is nicely maintained, it has great size pitches and the guys that runs the place are super friendly. Handy location for beaches.

不喜欢: Never any hot water we traveled with friends in a tent and they ended up having to use our shower in the caravan.

喜欢: Beautifully kept grounds by Grant and his team. A very warm welcome with all the information about the campsite we needed. A special touch for us was to be told where the sun rises and sets…which is important for sitting and having one or two evening G&T’s! The facilities are great and we had no problems with the showers being cold…just keep that button in! The campsite is in a great location for visiting all the nearby sites and is so peaceful and wonderful views. We had a wonderful stay.

喜欢: Workers on site were really friendly and helpful. Gave us info about local places and transport. Very quiet, unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but site was well laid out and tidy.

不喜欢: Shower block really needs updating, only 3 in ladies and no privacy. Only curtains and No heating. Really let the site down. Only cold water in wash basins in toilet block although toilets were very clean.

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away). As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life. And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
