It’s not every day you get to pitch up among fruit trees, so grab the chance to do just that at Frittenden Orchard, where off-grid grass pitches are scattered in orchards on a Kent farm near Staplehurst. For even more of a back-to-nature vibe, you can wander the 11-acre woodland wildlife haven around the camping fields, where you might get to see foxes, badgers and deer. Kick start the day at morning tai chi classes (beginners are more than welcome, so no-one has an excuse for not turning up), and the site owners are happy to suggest local walks and sightseeing ideas for you. Free-range eggs are available from their own hens (just think of the breakfast fry-ups…), and you might also like to wolf down some freshly picked strawberries from the farm’s fruit fields (in season). As this is a simple campsite, there’s no electricity but you will have a wifi connection and ice-pack freezing to keep your food fresh and chilled, as well as charging facilities for your devices, so you can keep in touch with the outside world. You can barbecue meals on grills brought from home, and pick up locally sourced produce from the handy store in Frittenden (five minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather someone else did your cooking while you’re away from home, there’s also a smashing pub in the village serving yummy burgers and local beers.

喜欢: Beautiful tranquil off the grid place to stay and escape. The bird chorus is out of this world and I have loved going to sleep and waking up to the tawny owl hooting away! The woodland is beautiful as is the meadow in the field beyond to watch the sunset. Diane couldn’t have been more helpful throughout my stay, she also helped with suggesting bike rides, walks and re-froze my ice packs for me.

喜欢: Site was just just as expected from the website. was lovely and quiet from excess people and everyone that did come spread out. Birdsong was so load - we loved it. Easy walk to the pub in Frittenden for dinner with small portions available. (The Bell and Jollocks.) Great for a short stay. Diana was very helpful and relaxed. Thanks so much!

喜欢: Friendly welcome by the owner, everything was well explained. Beautiful and spacious site. Lovely walks from footpath running through the site. Easy walking distance to the village and its pub. Great for a relaxing, quiet stay. Oh and thanks for the apples and plums.

喜欢: The young lady who greeted me on arrival was very informative about the local area and allowed me to choose where to pitch. A well run site always clean and tidy with clean facilities . I would certainly visit again.

Leeds Castle (25 minutes’ drive) has a host of activities, from guided tours to jousting tournaments and raptor displays, to keep families entertained all day. There are rose gardens to wander in Sissinghurst Castle Garden (10 minutes), and at moated Scotney Castle (25 minutes) you can follow trails through landscaped parkland. There’s more active stuff to do too; kids with energy to burn can wear themselves out on zipwires or mountain-biking trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes), or on the inflatable course at Bewl Water Aqua Park (25 minutes). Younger children can cuddle the cute creatures at Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats (20 minutes), and any rainy-day issues are taken care of by the indoor pool at The Weald Sports Centre (10 minutes). If you’ve treated the kids to their day out, you deserve some me-time too. How about heading into Royal Tunbridge Wells (40 minutes) to browse indie shops or lunch in the cosy bistros of The Pantiles? And if you fancy a night out, book tickets for shows at the Trinity or Assembly Hall theatres.
