Self-professed beach buffs will find themselves right at home here: this peaceful and family-friendly spot is right next to the sea with direct access to a sandy beach for swimming, fishing and basking. Astros Camping is around half an hour from Nafplio and an hour from Tripoli, as well as five minutes' drive from the splendid harbour village of Paralio Astros, filled with seafront restaurants serving everything from souvlaki to fresh fish, Italian cuisine and local specialities. This stretch of coastline is swathed with cracking beaches, so make sure your beach towel and swimming paraphernalia accompany you almost everywhere when heading out and about off site – you never know when they’re going to come in handy around this spectacular sea-fringed locale... Back at your friendly base, hang around the beach by the site to get full-on relaxed with a book, show the littlies a thing or two in the art of sandcastle construction, or try your hand at sea fishing. You can also lounge around (and feed) at the site's own eatery, and use it to refuel between spells of sea swimming. Amenities at Astros Camping include a food shop for snack supplies and local produce. Wifi is available too should ever you feel inclined to check up on what's going on elsewhere.

If you fancy finding a beach away from the site, then have an amble over to the family-friendly resort of Paralio Astros; its beach, a mixture of pebble and sand, is lined with seafront restaurants and bars, many of them serving seafood almost straight from the trawler. If you’ve got a car, begin your Peloponnese road trip at medieval seaside town of Nafplio, set against the backdrop of a steep peak topped by the fortress of Palamidi. Beach resorts are around here too, so once again be sure to pack your picnic and your swimming gear to make a day of it. An easy hour’s drive north of the site will bring you to Nemea, one of the best spots in all of Greece for swotting up on the local grape varieties. Drink like Dionysus, the ancient Greek god devoted entirely to this tasty grapey tipple, along the Nemean wine route to explore the vineyards dotted around the hills south west of Corinth. You can also visit the long-standing Domains Piropoulos to try organic wines, or Gaia Wines for the unfiltered kind. If you’re a die-hard fan of the rouge variety, then the undisputed champ of producing these is Lafkiotis Winery.
