With a name like Prague Camp, it’ll come as no surprise that this park is a top bet as a base for exploring the Czech Republic’s castle-filled capital. But what could very well pique your interest is how serene the island setting in the middle of the Vltava river is considering it’s only a 15-minute drive from the centre of the city. If ditching your car for a day or two tickles your fancy, many of Prague’s ace attractions are conveniently connected to the park by public transport. The speediest way to start sightseeing is by jumping on Metro Line B towards Smíchovské nádraží station, then changing for the tram or bus to Lihovar station. Rather board a boat? There’s also access to the city by ferry from a stop around a five-minute walk away. However you decide to get in, staff are on hand at the 24-hour reception in high season – whether at 4pm or 4am – to give tips on taking on the city’s world-class museums, ancient lookout towers and lush green parks. Also at the park is a bistro for Czech meals – eat them at the summer terrace if the weather’s warm – and a shared kitchen in the main building with a cooker, fridge, microwave and dishwasher. Fresh bread rolls are available to order and are delivered daily to the on-site grocery shop. A bike room means you can store your ride safely if you’re on a cycling hol.

Lokala sevärdheter

Prague’s one of Europe’s top city break destinations – and for good reason. Often referred to as the City of a Hundred Spires, it has hundreds of historical buildings, including those from the baroque and gothic architectural periods, to get a glimpse of. It’s best to get your bearings by starting out at the Old Town Square (around 20 minutes), the centre of the ancient part of the city. Gaze at the Astronomical Clock – preferably on the hour when the procession of the Twelve Apostles kicks off – then trot along the cobbles to the gorgeous Gothic Church of Our Lady Before Týn. The pedestrianised Charles Bridge (15 minutes), decorated with detailed statues of Catholic saints, is another landmark in Prague, as are the stately Vyšehrad and Prague castles (15 and 25 minutes). For views over the whole of the city, the summit of Petřín Hill is the place to be – ride up on the funicular or stretch those legs by pottering along the paths.
