Hankering after a handily located park in Pembrokeshire with fantastic countryside views? Here’s one for you: Pelcomb Cross Campsite, just off the A487 and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the amenities of Haverfordwest and the nearest beach at Newgale. Eye up the lush nature from the pitches (some of which have a gentle slope) and look out for wildlife at the park’s pond too: it’s a popular spot for critters such as otters, herons, buzzards and red kites. There’s also plenty of space for human guests to relax, whether they’d like to chuck a ball around or just park up for a meal on one of the picnic benches. Eats are easy to sort as firepits and barbecues are allowed at this rural site (as long as they’re kept off ground to avoid scorching) and a pub is two minutes’ walk away if you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking. A petrol station with a well-stocked convenience store and a fish and chip shop are half a mile away. If you'd like to roam without the car, it's handy to note there's a bus stop about 80 metres from the site. As well as being close to amenities, the whole park feels safe and secure as it’s monitored by CCTV. Facilities centre around a smart modern bathroom block with underfloor heating, a couple of family-sized showers and an accessible toilet and shower. There’s also a pressurised boiler system to make sure there’s oodles of hot water for freshening up. Please note that there are no electric vehicle charging points on site. If you would like to 'trickle charge' your vehicle, please speak to site staff first.

Tyckte om: Beautiful (partial) panorama (+) blocked by an un-used by sited caravan (-) . Nearby toilet (+) , sink (+) and elsan point (+) but showers, which are powerful and hot (+) were at the other end of the site (-) Remote check in 24 hours before telling me pitch number was a nice touch to make it easy (++) Great geographical position to reach St David’s, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and back to Haverfordwest (++) Recommended visits: St David’s St Anne’s Lighthouse (Dale) Broad Haven / Little Haven Newgale Haverfordwest

Från föreståndaren: Thank you for your review. I note that you gave us just one star for the WiFi. You didn't actually have the WiFi.. Those who do comment on how fast it is. Also I'd like to point out to others who may read this review that you had booked aGrass Panoramic pitch (with great views of the surrounding countryside. But due to the ground being still to soft to drive on, I put you on a gravel and grass Manorbier pitch at no extra charge. This is why you didn't have the views which you would have had on the Pana pitch due to there being a caravan on the adjacent pitch. This had just been used by its owner and was due to go back into storage. As regards the distance to the showerblock, (96m), If I had known that you preferred to be closer, then I'd have recommended a closer pitch. However you were only 15m from the small block at the top of our site which has a toilet and the 2 washing up sinks, which you may have found to be usefully close.

Tyckte om: This was in a great location with lovely views. Shower block was very clean, the site was quiet and had large pitches, if the weather had been warmer the picnic table would have been really useful. Chris was very friendly.

Tyckte inte om: Having to pay £5 for having a visitor and paying more for WI-FI.

Från föreståndaren: Hi Penny. Thanks for the feed back. I must explain that we charge for visitors who come to the site and stay for several hours as they will have arrived by car (parking can be limited at busy times) and will more than likely use our facilities ie. toilets, water and probably a little power. Also the wifi we had installed was the best and fastest system available at the start of 2023. We upgraded our internet connection to almost 1GB to deal with the campsite demand. The £2 per night is for as many devices as you like so we believe it to be a fair price for a fast connection. Our electricity and water bill in 2024 will be in the region of £15500 for a site turning over just over £100000. VAT of £9500 also has to come out of that and so we have to try and cover our costs where reasonably possible. If you still feel that paying for wifi is unreasonable, then we can give it away with no charge but your speed would be limited to 1mb. 99% of people who stay here are very happy with the wifi and often have have 4 or 5 deices connected to the system so in their case 40 or 50p per day seems ok to me.

Tyckte om: We were welcomed by Chris, so accommodating and very friendly. The site is lovely and peaceful with a relaxed atmosphere. Spacious pitches and the shower room/toilets were spotless. Lovely little washing up area and stunning views.

Tyckte om: Great facilities and welcoming staff. The site has a great view of the surrounding hills and is easy to get to. We had a picnic bench next to our pitch which was great to sit out in the evening. Had an hard standing pitch which has plenty of room. Only stayed one night so didn’t use the showers but clean and spacious toilet and blocks. Would definitely stay again !

When coming into Pelcomb Cross from Haverfordwest, your satnav may tell you to turn immediately by the Pelcomb Inn. This is not correct. The site entrance is 80 metres past the pub. If you are coming from St Davids, make sure to turn 80 metres before the pub. As you approach, look out for the site signs.

Here for a beach break? Set off for Newgale with its surf schools galore (10 minutes' drive) and check out the vast sandy shores of Tenby (40 minutes) as well. This top seaside resort has several takeaways for snacking on fish and chips with a view of the sea. If the tiddlers have had enough time with the bucket and spade, organise a trip to Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes) to ride the rollercoasters, then admire the animals at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (25 minutes). You could also interact with more creatures by booking a beach horse-riding trip from Nolton Stables (10 minutes). Take to the water after trotting on the sand during a visit to the Blue Lagoon aqua park (20 minutes), or dive into the Abereiddy Blue Lagoon (20 minutes), a brightly coloured pool that gets its turquoise hue from a slate bottom. Afterwards, get out on the sea with a boat trip from St Davids, a tiny city that’s also worth dropping by for the intricately designed cathedral and Bishop’s Palace (20 minutes).
