Not got the gift of the gab? Fear not, tongue-tied types: simply go along to Blarney Castle, hang yourself upside down and snog the world-famed Blarney Stone, heralded for centuries for bequesting travellers and barristers with unusual eloquence. Then get tongue-tied all over again when viewing the vista and facilities at Blarney Caravan and Camping Park. This family-run park is eight kilometres from Cork and three from Blarney village, but it’s secluded and peaceful enough to feel you’re in the middle of the country (perfect for wandering around and trying out your newly-won articulation skills, you may gather). There’s loads of open space for Blarney ball games, as well as a smartly-maintained play area and an 18-hole pitch and putt course (extra charge applies). The park is gently sloping and well sheltered, with views of Blarney Castle and the surrounding countryside. Facilities at Blarney are immaculate, from the free showers to the camp kitchen, and it’s all neatly laid out among well-maintained grass and spacious pitches. Blarney Caravan and Camping Park is easily reached from the ferry ports at Cork and Rosslare, and has a campervan service area if you’re bringing your own wheels from the UK. There’s also free wifi on site, for getting eloquent online too.

Estimated driving time: 3 hours. From Dublin: Take the M8 southbound. As you approach Cork, take the N8 towards Cork City. From the N8 take the sign for North Ring Road/Limerick N20 and then Blarney R617. From Galway/Limerick: Take N20 Southbound and then the R617 to Blarney. Distance 195km. Estimated driving time: 2.35 hours From Killarney: Take N72 to Mallow then the N20 to Blarney R617. Distance 95km. Estimated driving time: 1.30 hours.

Blarney Caravan and Camping Park is in north Cork, where the rivers of Blackwater are world renowned for coarse and game fishing; nearby Fermoy is an inland fishing centre to land trout and salmon. Head to west Cork for craggy coastline and gourmet food in Kinsale, Bandry or Baltimore (or all three), and east for farmers’ markets, Ballymaloe Cookery School, birdwatching at the coastline from Ballycotton to Youghal, and a trip to the Jameson distillery at Midleton. The islands off Cork’s south-west coast are a must: Bere for deep sea fishing and a sailing school; Dursey and Cape Clear for birdwatching and Sherkin for sparkling white beaches and a natural history museum. If you’re into your history and heritage – probably if you’re here to romance the Blarney Stone – Cork is like the rest of Ireland in having heaps of historical highlights, like Kanturk Castle; the town of Cobh, last stop of the Titanic before its journey towards New York, and the old town of Mallow with Mallow castle and a heritage centre for tracing Cork ancestors. There’s also a racecourse just outside the town; well, horse-racing is a pretty historical thing too…
