Have yourself an authentically Dutch hol while in North Holland province by settling in at Camping Duinzoomhoeve, a farm site surrounded by brightly blooming tulip fields off a quiet road set between the city of Den Helder and town of Julianadorp (both around 10 minutes’ drive). Fan of the coast as much as the countryside? This park's a top pick – it's about 400 metres from the sweeping Strandslag Falga beach for walks beside the North Sea and is in officially the sunniest part of the Netherlands (great if you're harbouring hopes of basking on the sand). There’s also plenty of space on the car-free site grounds of Camping Duinzoomhoeve for days outdoors. Kids can mess about in the sandpit or at the play area and go-kart park, and there’s also a football field and a miniature golf course. On a cycling trip? A covered shed (with a charging point for e-bikes) means you can keep your ride safe when you’re not dashing off to local nature reserves like the Mariëndal sand dunes and forest-covered Donkere Duinen. When thoughts turn to food, the site has a pizza oven for creating your own eats. Warm sandwiches and fresh eggs are sold at the park in the mornings, and barbecues, gourmet meals and food whipped up by the farmer’s wife are available other times of day. This park also has free wifi, water points and electric hookups. The toilet block, which is always stocked with toilet paper, is heated and laundry facilities are available.

Take a trip through the Mariëndal sand dunes (five minutes’ drive) to Den Helder (10 minutes) to watch the ships come in from the city walls. If maritime marauding most definitely appeals, head to the Marine Museum and learn the history of the Royal Netherlands Navy while checking out the preserved warships and submarine. Visit the early 19th-century Fort Kijkduin while you're here too, then swing by the bright red Lange Jaap, an active lighthouse reaching 55 metres high. Looking for ways to lure the kids there? Explain to them that it's one of the tallest of its kind in the world. For others ways to keep the small fry busy, the Amusement Park De Goudvis in St Maartenszee is 20 minutes away. Trips to the island next door, Texel – which is accessible by boat – should also get small explorers ready and raring to go. Ask on site about the nearby subtropical swimming pool, bowling alley, 18-hole golf course and canoe route too if you fancy giving any of these a whirl.
