Who’s to refuse a stay with festival vibes in the grounds of the grand Holkham Hall estate, which was built by an 18th-century earl? Holkham Hall is a pop-up site in north Norfolk that has very much a unique setting, surrounded by 25,000 acres of sloping parkland, an 18th-century Palladian-style house and walled garden. Sure, the main attraction might be easy access and discounted entry to the hall, walled garden and Holkham Stories Experience (which gives a run-down on the full history of the estate). However, the dog-friendly site is also in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just two miles from the Norfolk coastline, where there are some ridiculously scenic coastal walking and cycling routes. Take the half an hour’s walk to Holkham beach and explore the soft sand, dunes and lagoon. Enroute is the Holkham National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ walk), where there is plenty of wildlife hiding out in the pines, creeks and saltmarsh. Back at base – if the gorgeous estate can be called that – there’s a family-friendly festival atmosphere (a beach break with bunting, yes please). On the estate, guests can make use of the woodland adventure play area, ropes course, cycle and boat hire, gift shop and café, as well as a bunch of events geared towards families. There are plenty of pubs with beer gardens, shops and other places to eat in and around Wells-next-the-Sea too, which is 40 minutes’ walk from Holkham Hall.

Gostou: Great location, really quiet site - pop up bar was a great touch. The team on site were lovely.

Não gostou: The team were very quick to close the facilities down on the final morning.

Gostou: This is our second year camping at holkham hall and we absolutely love it. The facilities are clean and it’s great to have a pop up bar, also the food van which was tasty. Beautiful place, can’t wait to come back!

Gostou: We liked very much the beautiful and natural environment. Lovely to have a cafe on site and all the places of interest. We especially liked to be so close to the beaches and we cycled everyday as its rather flat in Norfolk. The staff and people at the pop up campsite were very friendly and helpful...altogether we had a brilliant relaxing time♡

Não gostou: Less pleasant was that we didn't know that all the gates shut in the evening and after a meal out we had to knock on the door of a nearby resident to find out where and how to get in. Next day we were told that 10pm is the latest we can come in ,which we thought was rather early as we had friends staying in another village and one night we just managed to be by the gate in time...phew!

Gostou: Staff were very friendly and helpful. The site for the tents was small and well laid out and the surroundings were beautiful, the sunset was stunning. The toilets were clean and well maintained. The grounds of Holkham hall are great for bike rides, the play area is fantastic for children. Who definitely recommend Holkham hall camping if they do it again.

Oh, to be on a steam train huffing and puffing past the coast, a hillfort and a disused railway platform… the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway (10 minutes’ drive) runs between Wells-next-the-Sea and Walsingham and takes in all of the above sights. You might be lucky enough to spot some seals along your coastal walks, but if you want to dedicate a trip exactly to that, check out the Beans Seal Trips (25 minutes). The Burnham Overy Footpath - Norfolk Coastal Path (10 minutes) is one of the aforementioned splendid coastal walks in the area and snakes through salt marshes and sand dunes. If crabbing and fishing trips to occupy you in Cromer (50 minutes), fields of lavender to see at Norfolk Lavender (half an hour) and abbey ruins for any hide and seek games at Creake Abbey (15 minutes), it’s likely you’ll have a splendid itinerary sorted out before you even depart.
