California dreaming? No, this place is for real. A 10-minute drive from the town of Indio in the Coachella Valley, Shadow Hills RV Resort is a true oasis. Lush green lawns, colourful plants and shady palms line this spacious resort, which runs a shuttle bus to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival and hosts pool parties through the trio of long weekends when it runs. Whether you’re into headline acts or hiking through the desert, Shadow Hills RV Resort is an excellent base, and a top spot for days around the park too. There’s a heated outdoor salt water pool with Jacuzzi and sun loungers, a clubhouse kitted out with a gym, kitchen and outdoor terrace and you can keep looking your festival best thanks to the on-site laundry. Visitors mention the spacious, clean washrooms and the way the staff at this family-run resort go the extra mile to help. For shops, bars, restaurants and takeaways, it’s 10 minutes into Indio; while you’re there check out the Coachella Valley History Museum and Wild Bird Centre, whose manmade marshlands are a sanctuary for an array of feathered residents from roadrunners to cormorants and pelicans. Lokalne atrakcje

A 15-minute away, the Coachella Valley Preserve is an excellent introduction to the local landscape and its walking trails: take the Pushwalla Palms circular route for a high ridge experience giving views of the San Andreas Fault whilst spotting coyotes, bobcats and horned owls en oute. Another top option is the Painted Canyon and Ladder Canyon trails starting just outside Mecca, half an hour away. At times, entering the canyons on wooden ladders or squeezing yourself down narrow slots, you feel as if you’re underground, until everything suddenly opens up and you could be the only person underneath a massive sky. Equally good on the visuals, two deserts converge with alien rock formations and eccentric foliage throughout the Joshua Tree National Park, also half an hour away. If you want the vistas without the blisters, take a half-hour drive to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, for a cable car ride taking you two and a half miles over Chino canyon and into the Mount San Jacinto National Park. If you prefer, you can walk up to the mountain's 11,000-foot summit, or link up with the Pacific Crest Trail, a hiking route stretching from Canada to Mexico. The border (with Mexico) is around an hour and three quarters away if you’re heading onwards, and it’s two hours to Los Angeles and the ocean.
