Let’s be honest: you may well spend much of your time here simply lounging on the gorgeously long and wide stretch of sand next to the site. If you can manage to leave it behind, though, there are plenty of other things to do nearby – even if you just make the trip into Figueira da Foz (10 minutes’ drive) to wander around the Palácio Sotto Mayr, the Núcleo Museologico do Sal and the Fort of Santa Caterina before hitting another of the town's beaches. Looking further along the coast, you may like to take walks to scenic spots like Miradouro do Cabo Mondego (15 minutes) or head to Nazaré (55 minutes), well known as the surfing capital of Portugal. Turning sights inland, you can visit historic attractions like the abandoned monastery at Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça (15 minutes) and the castle of Montemor-o-Velho (20 minutes), or continue on to Coimbra (50 minutes) to stroll through the cobbled streets and see all the medieval architecture.
