What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire. No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block and a washing-up area, and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.  Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Likte: The camp site was clean and tidy, the tent inside was clean and tidy, clean sheets, heater and kitchen ware supplied. The staff were welcoming, helpful and kind. The hot tub had fresh water for each guest with a nice vapour scent, fire wood supplied and when we were nearly out staff kindly restocked for us. The kids absolutely loved it and it was our first successful camping/ glamping trip, with 2 ASD boys we have never successfully made it through a whole night due to noise and discomfort. But we didn’t leave site till mid-morning, we will be booking again.

Likte ikke: The only thing that was slightly off was the girls bathroom didn’t smell very pleasant but the bathroom itself was clean and tidy and didn’t run out of toilet roll or hand soap.

Likte: It all!! Stayed in a deluxe bell tent. Loved the covered outdoor space, the hot tub and the general home from home feel. The team really lived up to 'nuestra casa es tu casa' We all loved the hot tub, the wood burning really added to the relaxed feel. Beds were comfy, tent was lovely and warm with the heater on. We only stayed for one night, but will definitely be returning. Thank you!

Likte ikke: Very minor - toilets were extremely clean but just a little bit smelly, which I think was coming from where the waste water from the camping pitches was disposed of. Not am issue for me, but it did put my daughter off using the bathroom. That is just me being really picky though. Again, thank you for a wonderful stay!

Likte: First stay, easy entrance with clear instructions about unloading car and parking. Stayed in a bell tent for last minute one night over bank holiday. Booking was easy paid in full and welcome email from Hill Farm and contact number for any questions which were answered promptly and very friendly. Tent was lovely, clean and extras such as heater, lamp, kettle were a bonus. Toilets/showers/wash area clean and close by. We went as two adults, an 11yo and two dogs more than enough space and lovely green to get a bit of fresh air. Would definitely go again.

Likte ikke: Nothing to dislike about the farm itself lovely and welcoming! Shame about the noise from the surrounding tents until 2am but guess that is camping life. 😂

Likte: This place is a hidden gem, absolutely brilliant place to stay and the option for 1 night is great, as its really hard to find somewhere with with a hot tub somtimes for 1 night, Tara and the team do an amazing job wev been 6 times in the last year or so and the place gets better everytime alot of hard work and money has gone in to make sure customers are happy and also out of the rain everything has been made undercover now which is great, great pubs withing walking distance and takeaways do deliver there, can't fault it at all

Likte: Great shower block and washing up facilities, the tent was immaculate and the heater was a really nice touch! The fact that you could park by your pitch made this even better for those with accessibility issues.

Likte: The tent was clean and well presented, we arrived late (after the check in time) but were still looked after and welcomed with a smile. The shower and toilets were clean and had enough space!

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).  For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).  In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).
