River dips, canoes and barbecues – a pretty fine trio indeed. And outdoorsy classics like these sit alongside fancy extras like an outdoor pool at SretanWolf in the tiny central Croatia village of Johi. This site's spectacular views make it a strong contender for nature-themed hols, but its location is pretty nifty too: this rustic spot is close to the speedy D3 route, making it a breeze to get out to far-flung cities such as Zagreb and Karlovac. And, with Slovenia so close, cross-border jaunts can be on the cards too should you wish. The Kupa river, besides acting as an international border, is said to be one of the cleanest and warmest water courses around these parts. Skip the 100-odd metres down to its banks for canoeing, to take a dip or to simply lounge around and watch the water flowing by… Back on site, the outdoor pool (which, by the way, is a fab vantage point for admiring the green surrounds) is another super spot for alfresco swims. There are plenty of activities for the kids to get stuck into here, too, from baking bread on an open fire to air rifle and archery sessions. For dinners in the open air, head to the firepit or set up a barbecue (with supplies from the supermarket 10 minutes' drive away); you can also leave the cooking to someone else and make tracks for the on-site café.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Streams, springs, waterfalls, watermills – stays around these parts are pretty sure to include a generous helping of the wet stuff. Visitors who head to a spot near Skrad (45 minutes' drive) can visit two such wonderful watery sights: Zeleni Vir ('The Green Spring') and Vražji Prolaz ('The Devil's Passage'). Canyons, caves, springs and boardwalks through narrow ravines place this geomorphic reserve at the top of many a traveller's list. Slightly further afield, Slunj (an hour and 10 minutes) is home to further aquatic attractions: the town's small waterfalls, age-old watermills and traditional buildings all make for a jolly good jaunt. For a proper wilderness, though, there's nothing like Plitvice Lakes National Park (an hour and 20 minutes), a nature hub of 16 lakes and 300 km² of gorgeous protected countryside. Several cities are also close at hand: Rijeka and the Adriatic coast are an hour and ten minutes away, while Zagreb, Croatia's capital and major cultural hub, can be reached in an hour. Nearby smaller cities are also worth a gander: Karlovac (30 minutes) is home to historic Dubovac castle and a top-notch aquarium.
