What a cute and comely pool – and only a kilometre from sandy Costa Blanca beaches. Camping Lo Monte is in the lively Alicante seaside resort of Pilar de la Horadada, close to the sands and excellent sailing spot of Mil Palmeras (the beach here links up with the Rincón and Puerto inlets). Shopping is tiptop in town too, as are the restaurants, bars and market. If you don't yet have the hang of the lingo while negotiating your bargains, Spanish lessons are available from the Lo Monte team, part of a full summer programme of activities for all ages including crafts, dancing, film nights and theme nights, and a kids' club for the sprogs. There's loads more to do on site alongside all this: facilities include that cute pool and paddling pool, a playground, a football pitch, volleyball and pétanque courts. Guests can buy food at the mini market, which also has a bread ordering service, eat at the restaurant or use the takeaway service. And in between it all, make significant space for a session in the the massage room or the spa and Jacuzzi. There are three amenities blocks on site; to keep everything else spankingly clean, there's also a launderette, a car/caravan wash and a dog shower area.

Mil Palmeras beach a kilometre away is a popular place in the summer months around this part of the Alicante coast, where sun seekers flock for the golden sand and clean water, restaurants and bars. Sun loungers, sunshades, pedalos and jetskis can be hired on the beach. There's a lively summer vibe too in local town Pilar de la Horadada, centred around its main shopping street of Calle Mayor and the restaurants of the Plaza Iglesia. Three golf courses are within 10 minutes' drive from the town. The nearest major town is Torrevieja, 18 kilometres away and south of the resort of Guardamar del Segura. Fishing is one of the main industries here: sample the freshest catches at the harbour restaurants or land your own specimens for supper from the fish market. From Torrevieja, drive south for more beach days at Cabo Roig, Campoamor and La Zenia. Two top options are within eight kilometres of the site: the walking trail along the Seco river from El Pinar de Campoverde, and the mud baths of Las Charcas, where wallowers can slather mud all over their bods, then take a dip in the sulphur lake to wash it all off. The salt marshes, reed beds and flamingos of Las Salinas Natural Park are within a 40-kilometre drive.
