Can’t wait any longer to catch some rays? After an outdoorsy family holiday, but just not that into putting up tents? Looks like you’ll be heading to Meltheane, a rather splendid campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Lefkada Town on the Ionian Island of Lefkada, where you’ll have the place to yourselves. And all you need to do when you get there is unload the car (there’s a private parking space close by), settle into your spacious (and solitary) bell tent, and your holiday is underway. You’ll certainly have your luxuries around you: beds for up to four people and lots of storage space for starters. Outside on the private decking, there’s a well-equipped alfresco kitchen with hob, fridge and sink, a picnic table and seating, and an exclusive-use, wooden-built amenities block with a shower and compost loo. When you’re lazing on site in hammocks shaded by olive trees, keep an eye out for chickens, sheep, goats and sometimes foxes having a wander around the olive groves. Pick up supplies for the barbecue from the local supermarket (five minutes’ drive), or head to the village of Kariotes (five minutes’ walk) for the cafés, bars and tavernas. Should you be travelling with family, you’ll also find a playground for the kids there, and the beach is a couple of minutes’ stroll further on.

Attractions à proximité

When you’re travelling with kids, they’ll probably demand a day at the beach. Kariotes Beach (five minutes’ walk) is a quiet pebbly spot for family days out, but if you’re chasing sporty action, head for Paralia Agios Ioannis (10 minutes’ drive) for windsurfing and kitesurfing on a long sandy stretch backed by historic windmills. Learn more about Lefkada culture at Kontomichio Folklore Museum of the Sfakiotes (20 minutes), with its displays of old farming tools and typical costumes, or see the dazzling traditional textiles and local pottery at Folklore Museum Karia (25 minutes). Catch wonderful views across the Ionian Sea to the Greek mainland from the viewpoint at the whitewashed, blue-shuttered Church of the Prophet Elias (40 minutes), and don’t forget to have a glimpse at the glowing icons inside the plain little church. Back down in Lefkada Town (10 minutes), have a meander around the colourful, shop-lined streets of its old centre and then make for the waterfront promenade for a souvlaki feast in one of the many tavernas overlooking the sea. If you’re a bit of a night owl, hang out in town after dark and flit from bar to club into the wee hours.
