On hol with the kids? Vodatent at Camping de Breede, five minutes’ drive from Warffum, is your go-to in Groningen: at this site is in the north of the northern Netherlands province, fab family times can be had everywhere you turn. Playgrounds are scattered across the site to keep mini travellers busy, while go-karts and bikes are also on hand for kids to commandeer. The park’s a centre of idling, with a TV room to veg out in, spacious grassy areas to sunbathe on and a heated pool to bask in. Handy with the racket? You can set up a tournament – or just a couple of games – on the tennis court. Schedules aren’t strict at this laidback site: entertainment’s organised spontaneously, both day and night, inspiring guests to go with the flow on their hol... Minds will surely turn to eats after swims and frolics, and Camping de Breede has this sorted in the summertime when a stall opens up on reception serving sandwiches and croissants. All the bits and bobs you need for cooking are supplied in each safari tent, including a portable kitchen with a fridge, coffeemaker, kettle and small stove for sorting supper indoors or outdoors. If alfresco dining takes your fancy the tables and chairs can be moved into the open air. Camping de Breede has shared sanitary facilities. Free wifi is available across the park and a supermarket is about a 20-minute walk away.

Camping de Breede sits in a regal position right next door to pretty Breedenborg Palace and a five-minute drive from the village of Warffum. Wander here along the canal or in the Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland museum, showcasing what Dutch life was like back in the mid-19th century. Swap history for animal antics at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen just over a 10-minute drive away, which looks after poorly marine mammals before releasing them back into the wild. Once you’ve learnt all there is to know about seals drive 25 minutes to the student city of Groningen, a lively locale thanks to its bars and clubs. Doing it on a day trip? The province's capital also has a handful of museums themed on maritime history, graphics and comics. Groningen’s also the gateway to the West Frisian islands for explores offshore using the ferry service from Lauwersoog, 25 minutes’ away from the site. Wanting more nature? The lake of Oldambtmeer is a 50-minute car ride for boat trips and roams beside the banks, while the Ennemaborg estate – also great for wanders – is 45 minutes away by car.
