Civilisation: who needs it? Get back to the wilderness at this well-appointed site in Namibia’s Kunene region, where desert elephants roam and klipspringers leap from rock to rock. A 20-minute drive from the very fine vistas of the Grootberg Pass and an hour from the town of Kamanjab, Hoada Campsite takes its name from the local Damara tribe’s word for ‘everyone’. All are indeed made welcome on this friendly site, each of whose generously-sized pitches can accommodate group parties and vehicles. Each pitch comes with its own kitchen and a braai/barbecue area with seating so you can sit together as the sun sets, watching the flames and seeing your evening feast sizzle. Thanks to a bit of ingeniously eco-friendly innovation, your barbecues heat the water in the boiler… so if you want hot showers, get grilling. With equal sleight of hand, the showers, sinks and toilets are tucked among the granite for maximum privacy and minimum impact. You’ll never be short of something to look at here, whether it’s the ochre-red sands, the landscape of boulders and mopani trees, or the uniquely Namibian desert elephants who wander by frequently. Hire a bike from the site and explore a little further.

Lugares de interés

Unless you’re planning to spend your hols as a hunter gatherer, you’ll probably need to hoof it over to Kamanjab an hour’s drive away for supplies. There are bars and eateries in town as well, making it a handy spot for the swapping of travel tips with fellow tourers, and it’s also worth the trip to Peet Alberts Koppie, a couple of minutes beyond town, to see the 1,500 or so ancient rock engravings, depicting giraffes, anteaters, leopard and other local wildlife. It's a smaller-scale version of the UNESCO-protected Twyfelfontein paintings, which are about two and a half hours away if you're a real rock art aficionado. To see some of the wildlife for real, the Grootberg Plateau and the trail-filled Etendeka Mountains at the edge of Palmwag nature reserve (50 minutes' drive) have top hikes and drives through a palm-dotted landscape, frequented by mountain zebra and jackals, leopards, lions and the largest black rhino population in Africa. A little further off, but certainly worth it for one of the world’s weirdest sights, it’s around two hours’ drive to the Skeleton Coast National Park, a fog-swathed coastal desert full of shipwrecks and whale skeletons.
