  • Spacious farm site at the foot of the Swartberg mountains
  • A 10-minute drive from Meiringspoort waterfall; Oudtshoorn 30 minutes
  • A family-run working farm in the Klein Karoo; wild swimming possible
Are shade, seclusion and Karoo views all on your wishlist? Then it's quite possible you could be imagining a stay at Meijersrust Farm, a wild Western Cape site overlooked by the Swartberg mountains and within a 10-minute drive of Meiringspoort waterfall. This peaceful spot is looked after by Barry, a long-time farmer and nature fan who is keen to share this region's outdoorsy sights with newcomers. Over 180 species of birds have been spotted on the farm – Barry's got a checklist if you fancy ticking them off one by one – and a wealth of plants including aloes, fynbos and cacti can be admired hereabouts. Need some respite from the midday heat? Meijersrust Farm has a range of options to help you keep cool, from chilling under its shade-spreading trees to taking open-air dips down at the dam. At less warm times of day there are hiking routes up to Meiringspoort to tackle, while the seriously fit can take on bike trails that climb to an elevation of 500 metres (check with Barry beforehand and he'll sort you out with the relevant maps and paperwork). The site's spick and span amenities block, meanwhile, should get a nod of approval from practically-minded sorts, as should the fact that braais can be brought along. If you could do without the faff of waiting for the grill to get sizzling, the nearby village of De Rust (five minutes' drive) has a couple of agreeable eateries to try out.

Local attractions

Outdoor leisure activities here are both brilliant and bounteous – highlights include trekking or driving through the Swartberg range's mighty mountain peaks (10 minutes' drive), cooling off in the pools by Meiringspoort waterfall (10 minutes) and dropping by to visit the feathered residents of the kid-friendly Cango Ostrich Farm (35 minutes). On the outskirts of Oudtshoorn, Cango Wildlife Ranch (30 minutes) gives you a chance to see any African animals you haven't had a chance to spot while out and about on your explores. More kid-friendly times can be sought down the road at the Cango Caves (50 minutes), one of the finest caverns to grace the Klein Karoo. Fond of a glass or few? You’ll easily fill your time in this part of the Western Cape, where making, sampling and (most importantly) sipping wine is something of a way of life. Local vineyards of note include Excelsior Vlakteplaas (15 minutes), known for its lip-smacking muscadel, and Mons Ruber Winery (15 minutes) where you can treat your palate to traditional pot-still brandy.
