  • Campsite in untamed bushveld near Hoedspruit in Limpopo province
  • A 45-minute drive to Kruger National Park and Blyde Dam river cruises
  • Swimming pool, wildlife walks and stargazing on site; communal braai
Calling nature lovers, adventurers and risk takers… leopards, lions and hyenas prowl the bushveld around Maru Djembe near Hoedspruit, and there are no fences around the site – so this place really hits the spot for an authentic wildlife experience. Zebras, sable antelopes, giraffes, buffalos and warthogs have been known to pay the camp a visit too, so keep a camera handy at all times. Bushveld peace and breaking free from the rat race is what it's all about here. If you love the sounds of the bush and want to zone out on other noise without losing the comforts of modern life, this is a great spot – Maru Djembe is bush camping with quite a few frills attached. Those frills include hot-water showers heated by paraffin heaters (so you’re guaranteed a relaxing soak after a long day of safaris), as well as flushing toilets and water points. At night, solar lights keep the camp illuminated so there won’t be a problem if you’re moving around after dark. As for leisure time, you'll be able to cool off in the swimming pool at sunset, join a guided walk around the estate – and don’t forget to pack your binoculars and a birding book as you’ll maybe get to see black storks and hornbills on your rambles – or gather in the alfresco arena to spot the stars on clear nights and share a communal braai.

Local attractions

A stay at Maru Djembe really is all about the wildlife. The site sits next to several game reserves where you can see Big Five animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) and close to the Phalaborwa (45 minutes’ drive) and Park Orpen (an hour) gates in the famous Kruger National Park, for guided safari tours, evening game drives and horseback treks through the bush. At the foot of the North Eastern Lowveld Drakensberg mountains, Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre (35 minutes) gives guests the chance to interact with elephants, wildebeest and jackals. Or for an animal-feeding encounter with a real difference, meet the hippo hand-raised by humans at Jessica Hippo (half an hour). Want to see the bush from above? Take an early-morning balloon safari (half an hour) to soar over the bush at sunrise, or keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five as you float over the game reserves (and don’t forget the camera). For another perspective on the wild untamed landscapes of the Limpopo region, take a boat from the jetty at Blyde Dam (45 minutes) and cruise down the river canyon lined by soaring cliffs.
