  • Friendly resort in Mpumalanga province, by the Sabie River
  • Waterfall walks and mountain biking trails within 15 minutes' drive
  • Heated and cold pools, restaurant, liquor store and mini market
This might be the merriest spot in Mpumalanga province: Merry Pebbles Resort sits on a prime stretch of the trout-packed Sabie river, about five minutes’ drive from the small South African town of Sabie. The team behind this quiet site know you’re going to be out all day hiking and biking through the wilderness, spotting wildlife and clambering across waterfalls... so they’ve made sure everything’s there for you at the start and the end of each adventure-filled day. Facilities are clean and spacious, baths as well as hot showers in the washrooms, a laundry to keep you looking your best. For supplies, basic and otherwise, you can stock up at the on-site mini market and liquor store, where you’ll also find ice, firewood, a cash machine and mobile top-up cards for sale. If you want a break from self-catering, the restaurant is open from 7am to 9am for pre-booked breakfasts and between 545pm and 845pm for evening meals. There’s a pair of pools to splash about in, one heated, one for cooling off, and the kids are kept busy with the playground, trampoline, jungle gym and giant chess set. The Merry Pebbles team are more than happy to help with local information and arranging activities, from fly fishing on the Sabie to mountain biking round the various waterfalls.

Local attractions

A number of mountain biking trails start 10 minutes’ drive from the site, from gentle riverside pedals to technical black runs at dizzying height. Further high octane activities, such as white water rafting and abseiling, zip wires and archery can be arranged in Induna, half an hour away. For some, the sheer pleasure of walking through the surrounds will suffice: head to the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve (half an hour) for cracking views of this region of montane forests, open savannahs and bushveld, and trails spotting rare Blue Swallows, Cape Vultures and Taita Falcons. A little further away (45 minutes), the Makobulaan Nature Reserve is a zone of forested ravines full of chattering baboons and vervet monkeys, Cape clawless otters and aardwolves. There’s no walk that can’t be improved by a waterfall, and fortunately, the assorted cascades of Mac-Mac, Lone Creek and Bridal Veil (10 and 15 minutes’ drive) are all surrounded by paths for trekking and spots for just taking it all in. For a different perspective make for Sudwala Caves (45 minutes), a maze of fossil-filled tunnels from a time when all these mountains were under the sea, with the added bonus of a dinosaur park next door.
