This is a site you should pretty much insist on. Slovenia's Adria Ankaran Camping has so much going for it – it’s in an excellent position for day trips to Ljubljana (an hour’s drive away) or pretty Piran. On top of that it’s next to a beach and surrounded by pine and cedar trees for relaxing times, and is three kilometres from the Italian border when you fancy a slice of Italian life too (Venice is around two and a half hours away). And there's oh so much more. The site's setting in the small seaside town of Ankaran on the Gulf of Trieste is also five kilometres from the scenic resort of Koper, and has the Parenzana cycle route a few minutes away. If you’d rather take a stroll, there’s a lovely two-kilometre walking path/boardwalk through the salt meadows to Sveta Katarina just outside the site. Sticking around on site? There are often gorgeous sunsets to be seen from this west-facing spot, so time your day accordingly. Watersports including paddleboarding and pedalo boating are available at the beach, which also has a water park. On site, you can splash around at the indoor and outdoor pools, as well as have serene Slovenian days at the wellness centre with Jacuzzi while the kids are occupied at the summer kids' club (mornings) or discos (evenings). And there's yet more… Such as playgrounds, tennis courts, a volleyball court, miniature golf, bouncy castles and a busy programme of entertainment for both adults and kids. Food? Well sorted too, of course – there’s a mini market, a bar and a beachside restaurant serving tasty Istrian dishes for lunch and dinner (or to take away).

Liked: The campsite has lots of trees so our tent was in the shade most of the day. Everything is close by the ministore, running water, the restrooms/showers, the beach, the pool. The restrooms and showers were kept clean. There's a great bakery just outside the camp and a landing stage (15-min walk) where you can get on a fairly cheap boat to nearby scenic cities (Koper, Izola, Piran). Italy is 15-20 min by car. The staff is friendly and were most helpful getting us the right lot.

Disliked: We were not given the campsite we asked for (with grass) but upon our request we were relocated to a wonderful site with grass. The lots are huge but not separated visually by anything except for the trees, so you better bring your own screens. The store on site (and the one right outside the camp) was closed when we arrived in the afternoon because of some national holiday. There's no kitchen facility, although there's a place to clean the dishes.

Liked: großer Campingplatz direkt am Meer. Sehr viel Baumbestand, also viele schattige Plätze, was im Sommer sehr angenehm war. Ein Teil der Sanitäranlagen ist schon Modernisiert worden. Ein kleiner Laden auf dem Gelände mit dem nötigsten. Wenn man bereits nachmittags duschen geht, hat man Glück und kann warm duschen. Das Personal macht mind.3x am Tag die Bäder sauber, aber bei so vielen Menschen kommen sie einfach nicht hinterher, das es immer sauber ist. Zwischen Ankaran und Koper liegt ein Containerhafen, es fahren entsprechend viele große Schiffe in der Bucht. Es gibt nur ein Lokal am Strand…da schließt die Küche um 19:00 Uhr ( sowas versteh ich nicht) Es gab wohl noch ein weiteres Lokal, das war ganz geschlossen.

Liked: Schattiger und großer Platz, nah am Wasser, generell tolle Ausstattung, freundliches Personal, super Ausgangspunkt um Koper etc. zu besuchen

Disliked: Etwas in die Jahre gekommen, In der Dusche kommt überall Wasser hin, auch da wo man sich umzieht. Sanitäranlagen könnten teilweise etwas sauberer sein und sollten saniert werden, aber grundsätzlich ok. Relativ teuer für den Zustand

Liked: Niks eigenlijk

Disliked: De foto’s op het internet zijn niet wat het in werkelijkheid is. Heel oude sanitaire voorziening. Het strand kijkt uit op een industriële haven. Zwembad heeft zoutwater en is echt ranzig. Voor ons was het gelukkig maar voor 1 nacht maar zou het niemand aanraden.

Local attractions

This excellently placed site is close to cycling routes and nature reserves, Italian towns and Slovenian villages, coastal hikes and long beach days. Horse riding, watersports and forest hikes can be arranged close to the site. Bring a bike along to pedal the kilometre to the Parenzana cycle route, for as long a ride as you can muster along its 80-kilometre length of old railway that once connected Trieste to Buje and Poreč. You could also mosey across the border to Italy's Muggia six kilometres away, the only port town on the Istrian peninsula. There's a strong Venetian influence here around its handsome harbour and old villas, ruined city walls and 14th-century castle: drink it all in from a seafood restaurant on the waterfront or with a jug of wine in the square behind the port. From Muggia, take a ferry to the port city of Trieste, 15 kilometres from Ankaran, to see such famed sights as its scenic seafront, main square the Piazza Unità d'Italia, Miramare Castle and gardens, and the Victory Lighthouse. Trieste has been claimed as the most underrated tourist destination in the world, so get there quick before it's swallowed by the throngs.
