  • Peaceful site on the edge of Elst in Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park
  • A half-hour drive to Utrecht and 40 minutes to Arnhem
  • Landscaped park with restaurant, tennis court, play area and bike hire
If you’re eying up the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park as an outdoor holiday destination, where better to base yourselves than a park that’s centrally located within the park? Plan a stay at Camping de Tabaksschuur, in the village of Elst, and you’ll be within easy reach of all sorts of excellent walking and bike routes plus a good cluster of family days out. The scenic views start right there at the park, which has been carefully landscaped and planted with lots of native greenery. There’s history to the place, too – the family business has been running since 1972, but the two well-preserved old tobacco barns at the centre of the site date back further than that and give a good nod to the area’s heritage. Heading out to explore the surroundings? Start with the Amerongse Berg nature reserve, a few minutes’ walk away (or accessible on a great mountain bike route from just outside the site), then get set to spend days biking or walking through scenery of forests, rivers, dykes and pretty villages. Rhenen, Veenendaal, Wageningen and Wijk bij Duurstede are all within cycling distance for a bit of urban time, or you could drive up to Utrecht in about half an hour for some city culture. This is a peaceful and laidback site that’s popular with young families and more mature travellers – it’s got a play area, tennis court, games room and pétanque court but if you’re after lots of on-site activities you’ll want to look elsewhere. A bar (with snacks available), bike hire and a launderette are also provided, and it’s a short walk to shops and places to eat in the village.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is a great campsite if you're looking for a quiet spot with good facilities. It's right next to a huge woods with gorgeous bike trails and lots of walking opportunities. Our 14 year old particularly appreciated free hot chocolate in the common room, and free use of sockets to charge phones! There's a TV in the common room so we could watch the Olympic highlights of an evening. The Wifi is really good, there's a lovely tennis court, a football space, and a really nice trampoline. Our kids are too old for the playground but it looked good too. If you're looking for somewhere with lots of small children where your kids can make friends with others, this probably isn't the place for you as it's mainly cabins and generally older people. But we had a lovely space for our tent, with shade and a free electric point (if we'd had the necessary adaptor!). There is a little bit of traffic noise from the nearby road, but really overall it's one of the most peaceful campsites we've stayed in as a family. There's also an infrared sauna, which we didn't use but might be nice in colder weather! We also really appreciated the fact that there is a big fridge and freezer for campers to use. There isn't anywhere on the campsite to buy bread or other supplies but the local shop is a 5 minute cycle away.

Disliked: You have to pay for the showers, but they are very clean and if you use the family shower or the one in the stall with the sauna you get 6 minutes rather than 5. Since charging phones is free it seems to balance out though!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly Staff, reception and sitting room. The large Sitting room had free coffee machine and was air conditioned. Although we had no children with us the sports and games facilities were great. Good supermarket and bakery a km down the round in Elst. Pitches were fabulous and quiet

Disliked: Nothing

Cabin

Liked: Clean trekkershut with some useful extras. Exceptional clean toilet and shower block. Quiet, peaceful, beautiful campsite.

Disliked: Terrible welcome. We arrived at 5.30pm, reception had closed at 11am. Rang bell, eventually answered by unfriendly voice. No apology. Told to wait one moment. Many moments later a young girl appeared who didn’t really know what she was doing, gave us our key and shower tokens but we didn’t really ‘check in’ properly so didn’t pay or get WiFi passcode. Paid before leaving and paid more than expected. Disappointing.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site. Good facilities. Shower tokens are €1 not 50c. Free coffee machine. Good toilet block and showers. Great local walks and scenery.

Disliked: Not allowed to drive car up to pitch. Have to use garden centre trolley to cart it there. We were okay as close to car park but some pitches were quite far away.

Local attractions

Mix a bit of history into your days of exploring the scenery with outings to Amerongen Castle (five minutes’ drive), Duurstede Castle (20 minutes) and Soelen Castle, or visit the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein to see tanks and other memorabilia from World War II. Ouwehands Zoo is 10 minutes away for kid-pleasing days, or it's a half-hour drive to the excellent Burgers' Zoo, where you can see animals from all over the world in a series of themed ecosystem areas. There are several small towns around that are worth a stop as you roam, but you might also like to consider some time exploring the streets and museums of Arnhem (40 minutes) or checking out the Miffy Museum, DomUnder and Sonnenborgh Observatory in Utrecht (half an hour). Once you’ve had your fill of outings, walks or bike rides for the day, seek out one of the local aquatic areas to cool off: Henschotermeer beach (20 minutes’ drive) or the Leersum forest pool (10 minutes) are both lovely places for an open-air dip.
