Comfort, space, service and plenty of relaxation… that’s camping at Freizeitpark Klaukenhof, set near Datteln in the north-eastern Ruhr. This spot is particularly popular as an overnight stop for cyclists and walkers exploring the flat, watery landscapes of the Münsterland region. As well as accommodating active types on short stays, this is a firmly family-friendly holiday park with masses of stuff to do on longer breaks – the kids will likely want to let off steam at the adventure playground with sandpits for toddlers and numerous slides, swings and climbing frames for older kids. Challenge sporty offspring to games of soccer or beach volleyball, or let them try their hand at go-karting or skateboarding. Any animal-mad youngsters can head for the petting zoo to cuddle rabbits, goats and the friendly donkey Grisella, visit the pony paddock and spot wild deer grazing in the field next door. Truly there should never be a dull moment for kids here. Adults will be able to chill out too, as pitches are spacious and the shower block spotless. Food and drink concerns are all taken care of as well – with a country-inn-style restaurant and alfresco summer terrace serving up barbecue goodies by a tree-shaded pond. And in the evening, you'll be able to sink a stein or two of local brew in the beer garden.

Liked: Lots of space. Good electric hook ups. Decent toilets and showers. Bar and food available. Dog friendly. Plenty of nice walks. Peaceful and friendly.

Disliked: Very little nightlife or shops locally. Nearest supermarket 2 miles.

Disliked: Unfortunately due to the lack of marked pitches a very large group congregated playing loud "techo" music from when we arrived until late evening. Started next day at 9am promoting us to leave early especially as it looked like they were gearing up for more arrivals. A very nice rural Campsite ruined. It was a holiday weekend but if we had been advised it was party central would not have booked.

Liked: Tolle Lage auf der großen Wiese. Gaststätte und dortiges Personal ist nett. Guter Ausgangspunkt für Wanderung und Radtour.

Disliked: Toilettenhaus war mäßig sauber. Duschen sind alt und man hat dort keine vernünftige Ablagemöglichkeit für die trockenen Sachen. Zwei von fünf Duschen haben eine Tür. Stromverteiler sind auf der großen Wiese sehr spärlich verteilt. Nehmt viel Kabel mit! Kein WLAN auf der Campingwiese Chaotische Platzvergabe auf der Wiese. Einige Wagen in der zweiten Reihe wären im Notfall nicht raus gekommen.

Liked: Lovely setting that was easy to access by road. Five minute drive from local shops/petrol etc. The owner wasn't around when I arrived (quite late), but answered the phone, spoke great English and was very nice and helpful. I was allowed to park my car next to my pitch (probably because it was very quiet).

Liked: Everything was perfect for our stay. We had a nice little pitch and set up super easy. We were near things but still felt secluded which was very nice. Being from America camping is a lot different in Germany than it is back home, but this last weekend made it feel like we were all just by ourselves doing our own thing. I would come back here again in a heart beat :)!

Liked: Park was fine plenty space given for pitch

Disliked: Not as advertised bar/ restaurant was past best drinking water hard to find , track in very narrow and twisted lazy manager with little or no info.

Local attractions

The riverside Roman-Lippe Route bike path goes right past the campsite on its way through the Ruhr to the River Rhine, and there are easy family rides and strolls along the Wesel-Datteln Canal towpath to its major junction with the Dortmund-Ems Canal (20 minutes’ walk). Add a bit of culture into the mix with waterside walks in the gardens and guided tours of the Baroque-era Nordkirchen Palace (20 minutes’ drive). The lovely city of Münster (45 minutes) rewards a day trip with gorgeous gabled architecture around the Prinzipalmarkt central square, and 800 works of art by Picasso in his namesake art museum. Once an industrial centre, the lively city of Dortmund (half an hour) has reinvented itself as a cultural hotspot, with art museums, a zoo and classical performances at the modern concert hall. At the end of a day exploring, grab a glass of chilled wine in an alfresco Alter Markt café. You can mug up more on the industrial heritage of the Ruhr district with a visit to the Henrichenburg Boat Lift in neighbouring Waltrop (15 minutes).
