Liking the sound of a family-friendly camping adventure on the Baltic Sea coastline? Camping Ostsee - Campingpark Rerik may be the spot for you; it’s in a tip-top Pomerania setting just 10 minutes’ walk from the beach resort of Rerik, with bags of activities close by to keep everyone of all ages happily entertained. You can be as active as you wish. Work out in the site's well-equipped gym, take up watersports, follow scenic hiking trails or explore historic local villages. Cruise the Baltic Sea on a boat trip, stroll along the waterfront prom or play beach football on the sand… And because happy kids means happy parents, toddlers can romp in the on-site play park, jump about on the bouncy castle and take part in free organised entertainment like face painting and a kids’ disco. Older offspring may prefer playing volleyball, pool or table tennis, and you can all enjoy the latest films in the cinema (open May to October). Alternatively, of course, you can linger at your tree-shaded pitch with a good book, and only stagger as far as the licensed bistro – it’s open all day. If you’re fending for yourselves in the cooking department, it's handy to know that the kiosk is well-stocked with essentials like fresh bread, groceries, ice cream, chilled drinks and camping supplies (the latter useful if you’ve left something vital at home).

Local attractions

Proud home of one of the longest promenades in Germany, Rerik (10 minutes’ walk) is also known for its impressively vast sandy beach. You can hire boats from the marina for a sail along the Baltic Sea coastline, let the kids race around flying kites or take a cycle ride to Bastorf Lighthouse (20 minutes by bike). Head to the Salzhaff salt lagoon (half an hour’s walk) with binoculars for spotting migratory wading birds, or don a wetsuit to participate in windsurfing and kitesurfing adventures. If you’re got young kids in tow, the calm waters of the lagoon are also suitable for safe paddling and novice swimming. Well worth a day trip, historic Rostock (50 minutes’ drive) centres on Neuer Markt, a square lined with pastel-hued gabled townhouses (mostly restored after World War II). There are several striking Gothic churches to have a poke around (don’t miss the astronomical clock in St Mary’s Church) nearby, but if the kids are resistant to culture, divert to the seafront and have a snoop round the frigate ‘M/V Dresden’, or have a stroll past the fishing boats moored up along Alter Strom Canal.
