  • Family-friendly site two minutes’ walk from sandy Baltic Coast beach
  • A 20-min drive from Boltenhagen and the UNESCO city of Wismar
  • Restaurant, shop and bike rental; fishing within walking distance
Coastal saunters, lakeside fishing and rolling through the countryside on two wheels… If that sounds like a hol you wouldn’t say nein to, settle in for scenic stays at Campingplatz Ostseequelle, a family-friendly site less than 20 minutes’ drive from the Mecklenburg city of Wismar. On the Baltic Coast – Germany’s answer to the French Riviera – this is a top spot for beachy getaways: within two minutes’ easy walk of the site is a sandy stretch with more than three kilometres of kid-friendly seaside, plus windsurfing and kitesurfing for bigger types. The Baltic Sea’s apparently always two degrees warmer than the air too, so test that out by dipping toes in the water... If the Baltic’s a little nippy, stick to dry land by nipping back to site to hire a bike for the day – there are plenty of cycle routes hereabouts (and hiking trails if two legs trump a set of wheels), so clamber into the saddle for an explore. Or venture as far as Wismar for a day splashing about at the Wonnemar waterpark, where guests of the site get a handy discount. Lazy site days are a must: there’s lots here to keep everyone entertained, with clubhouses for teens and younger family members, fishing lakes for anyone in need of some serenity, and an outdoor chess set for the thinkers. There's a cedar sauna on site with forest views (where deers and wild boars have been spotted in winter) bookable by groups for an extra charge. There's also a meadow with 100 square metres of space for dogs to play. Food’s well dealt with too: a small shop has fresh bread and essentials, the communal camping kitchen should suffice for home-cooked eats, and a high-season Italian restaurant will keep foodies in pasta, pizza and wine.

Local attractions

Families will want to move straight from that lengthy beach to KinderMotorLand, an amusement park just three minutes’ walk from base, where little petrolheads can zoom around tracks on motorbikes, quads and beach buggies, then bounce the adrenaline out on the trampolines. Want something a touch less high octane? Head to the horse farm in Oberhof (a five-minute drive) to opt for slower paced trekking, or pile into the car for much longer jaunts to Timmendorfer Strand’s aquarium. There are lots of urban options round here too, starting with encounters at the animal park and explores of the Schloss Bothmer palace and museum in Klütz 10 minutes away, then having a day wandering around the zoo, museums and pretty cobbled streets of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Wismar. That’s not the only city nearby either… Schwerin is about 45 minutes from base, and highly recommended for its castle island, cathedral, sculpture trail, zoo, and pinball museum. Lübeck is just a little further away (50 minutes), but worth the extra distance to see the famed Holsten Gate, stunning architecture and its 200-year-old pharmacy.
