  • On the banks of the Großen Pälitzsee in the Mecklenburg Lake District
  • Half an hour's drive from walks and bike rides in Müritz National Park
  • Beach area, boat rental, playground and volleyball court
A lake, little boats, birds, a campfire… if that little lot pretty much sums up the experience you’re after from your break, take a peek at Campingplatz am Großen Pälitzsee, a Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania site 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Strasen. The lake in question is (no prizes for guessing this one…) the Großen Pälitzsee, and the little boats are ready for you to rent and set sail from the site’s boat dock. Both motorboats and person-powered craft are permitted here, and there are links to lots of the Mecklenburg Lake District’s other bodies of water so you can really make a day (or few) of pottering about. The boat dock isn’t the only direct access to the lake – there’s also a beach area for folk who’d rather settle down to admire the view, take a freshwater swim or find a spot to dangle a fishing rod in the water. Something a tad more active? The site’s also got a playground, a beach volleyball court and a sports area, and it’s surrounded by forest with woodland trails to tramp along. If you need even more, the Müritz National Park’s whopping 32,000 hectares of forest, meadow and lake is about half an hour away by car. Both active souls and those who’ve elected to take it easy are both welcome to spend evenings chilling out at the site’s dedicated campfire; there’s a well-stocked shop that should see you sorted for fireside snacks.

Liked: Location

Disliked: The place was tatty, most caravans are left there& look abandoned, with bits of odd wood to make fences , the man stood near our car looking at his watch waiting for dead on 3 pm to let me check in, I went in reception the next morning to get leaflets as the lights were on & 2 men were in there, 1 shouted at me in German, I said can I get leaflets? Then the other man marched me outside to show me the opening times, I was 5 minutes early, I asked if I could grab some leaflets but he wouldn’t let me, the lady was very helpful though, I wouldn’t return

Local attractions

Bring bikes, bring boots, bring boats, bring binoculars… all are a good idea for folk heading to the Müritz National Park, half an hour away by car. Many kilometres of waterway and trail run through the park known locally as the ‘Land of a Thousand Lakes’ (there are actually only about 100, but that’s still pretty good going). Ospreys, cranes, eagles and storks often hang out around these parts so it’s worth turning your gaze upwards now and then (especially if you remembered the binoculars…) If all the natural greens and blues get a bit overwhelming, schedule in a trip to one of the local historic houses for a change of scenery. Rheinsberg Palace and Schloss Mirow are both about half an hour away by car, and there’s a fab castle in Neustrelitz (40 minutes), with a small zoo and a sculpture garden. More intrigued by things that move? Take a trip to the Rechlin aviation museum (45 minutes) to see the collection of flying machines from across the ages.
