  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven with lush greenery and nine ponds
  • A 40-minute drive to Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Melun
  • Activities on site include fishing, volleyball, badminton and massages
With lush greenery, nine ponds and a 34-hectare space, Les Étangs de la Bassée is thoroughly peaceful. A wildlife haven this place is indeed, 100 kilometres south of Paris and surrounded by the lakes, rivers, countryside and forests of Île-de-France. It’s the site’s ponds that take central stage, though: they’re named Arôme, Idylle, Palmyre, Atoll, Lagon, Sauvage, La Lagune and La Roselière. What a unique setting this estate is – and one that is also dog-friendly, good news for those travelling with their canine companions. There are plenty of ways to make memories with the activities that the site runs on the estate or in the surrounding area. This might include joining in with fishing initiations for the young and old or playing beach volleyball and badminton. If you’d rather be pampered instead, the site can organise massages. There are animals in the aviary, wellbeing and cultural activities, sports and all sorts for friends, families and couples to get stuck into. When you’re ready to get out and scope out the area outside of the commune of Gravon in Seine-et-Marne, the site is 40 minutes’ drive from Melun and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Provins and an hour and 25 minutes from Paris. Those celebrating big events can request tailor-made events like weddings, birthdays, business seminars and team building in the privatised reception areas, which include a villa and clubhouse. The villa can seat 120 people (on request).

Local attractions

Whether it’s an outdoorsy day out you’re after or sightseeing and tasty eats, there’s plenty of scope for such activities from Les Étangs de la Bassée. Montereau (15 minutes' drive) has everything from museums and a cathedral to the dark and misty Caves Saint-Nicolas (20 minutes). Melun (40 minutes) is a top spot for more museums, sampling the strong Brie de Melun and strolls along the river Almont. What of that outdoorsy stuff, then? Well, the Forest of Fontainebleau (50 minutes) has crags for climbers and plenty of hiking or horse-riding trails through ancient trees. Gâtinais Français Natural Regional Park (55 minutes) is a little further on with glades, forests, rivers, excellent local beer and Gâtinais honey specialties. There are more historical places, of course, including Provins’ (40 minutes) medieval ramparts, underground tunnels and 12th-century hilltop tower or the 17th-century Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte (35 minutes) up northwest.
