  • Family-friendly campsite on the River Loing in the Île-de-France
  • 25 minutes’ drive to Fontainebleau; direct access to the Scandibérique
  • Sports, shop and food trucks
Rather like the sound of a family-friendly Fontainebleau holiday with bags to do straight from your pitch? Perhaps it’s time to book Camping La Rivière Dorée, an Île-de-France campsite at Bagneaux-sur-Loing, with its volleyball court, table tennis, pétanque court and playground for younger kids. That should keep everyone happy, at least for a while. Laid out on a four-hectare woodland estate, La Rivière Dorée overlooks the Seine-et-Marne’s River Loing, should you prefer canoeing or paddleboarding (book both and hire gear nearby). Also available right next door: cycle hire and tennis courts. So you see, there’s no excuse to ever be bored. Everything else is pretty much taken care of too. Bread and pastries are available every morning, or you can pre-book (by 8pm the night before) a whole family breakfast to pick up from reception. A waffle stand and food truck selling burgers and pizzas take care of day-time snacking, while you can pick up any forgotten essentials at the on-site shop. A washing machine requiring an extra fee can keep everyone looking pristine, and if you’ve left any vital baby gear at home, you’re sure to find it for rent at the site. Arrived at La Rivière Dorée feeling frazzled? No problem, you can iron out any stress wrinkles with massages and treatments at the wellness centre; these are based on availability and must be booked in advance when you are on the site.

Disliked: Showers could have been slighty warmer.

From the manager: Dear customers, Thank you so much for your nice review on our campsite. We have well noted your preference for slightly warmer showers. The necessary is done :)

Clean, friendly campsite let down by some niggling issues.

Electric grass touring pitch (comfort, plus)

Liked: Neat and tidy campsite with flat level pitches. Very clean and modern washrooms/showers. Friendly and helpful staff. Small play park on site for younger kids plus a larger play park more suited to older kids about 5 mins walk down the road.

Disliked: Poorly lit shower block and washing up area. Water for washing up was not hot enough. I felt the showers were not hot enough (definitely too cold for young kids or if you have long hair) and the light for the shower block is on an 8 minute timer so take a torch if you plan to have a shower after dark! No drive over area for dumping motorhome grey waste. Toilet paper not provided in the toilets.

From the manager: Dear customers, Thank you for pointing out the great sides of our campsite. We hope you arrived home safely. We are so sorry that we were unable to assist you further during your stay. Some of your comments came as a real surprise to us. At no time during our many encounters and warm exchanges; did you express the things that bothered you. Please note that we can only help our guests if they share their little worries with us. Both toilet blocks are very well lit, with plenty of new ceiling lights. Light is switched on the whole night at the washing up area. With regards to hot water, the boiler is set at temperature 57 degrees C. The recommended temperature is between 50 to 60 degrees C. The water was perhaps not hot enough for you and your young children. Had we known that, we would have increased the temperature of the boilers to 59- 60 degrees C. Toilet paper: Since summer 2023, our 2 sanitary facilities have been equipped with large collective toilet paper dispensers right next to the toilets. Perhaps you mistakenly thought they were hand towel dispensers? Collective soap dispensers have also been installed. All these facilities on site are highly appreciated. Customers may bring their own toilet paper should they wish to have it at hand. Timer: Timer for showers is 8 minutes (maximum timer lengh on our device). Our electrician is working on a new timer system. For grey waste: As confirmed at reception, we do not provide this service on our campsite yet. Please note that under the heading of "Utilities" on Pitchup, there is no mention that our campsite has an area for "dumping motorhome grey waste". We very kindly gave you an address nearby where motorhome travellers from our campsite take care of their grey waste. Our main concern is our clients' well being. We have been indeed very pleased to attend to your various queries on children's shops and activities durting your stay at La Rivière Dorée. We shall be delighted to welcoming you again! Best regards, Amélie and her friendly team.

Fantastic site with everything you need and kind helpful staff.

Liked: The beautiful site, lovely location, great clean and useful bathrooms/washrooms and services but most of all the helpfulness and kindness of the owner and staff. They were so personable, met us with a smile, checked we had everything we needed and added little extras which made the trip easier. After finding out we had travelled through the night they even prepared our accommodation a little earlier so we could rest then enjoy the rest of our day exploring the local area which is just stunning! Beautiful river walk and great park for children! The next morning our breakfast was prepared and drinks were available which were both delicious and good quality. They even let us charge our devices with them! Unfortunately we were only staying one night on route to Disneyland, on reflection I would stay here and travel in next time as the distance is manageable and you can escape the Disney bubble and have some relaxing natural times also. We stayed in a teepee, it was as fantastic, comfortable and cute! We loved it as a family of 4 there was plenty of space and a table and box were given to us to make things more comfortable. The other accommodations were beautiful the skylight bubbles looked amazing but my favourite were the gypsy huts. This would be a fantastic location for any style group as they seem to offer lots of options! The big events sound fantastic and would make a celebration very special. We arrived the first weekend of opening, it was still quite cold weather but inside our teepee we were cosy and warm, they kindly gave us extra blankets. The food trucks looked great also, there was also talk of cocktails which we would have enjoyed if staying longer. Next time we will!

Disliked: That we didn’t stay longer.

Electric grass touring pitch (comfort, plus)

Liked: Friendly staff. Excellent English and rapport with Peter and Amily (Mrs Smooth). Good sized flat pitch with hedges around. Excellent shower and toilet facilities. Very clean. Limited menu food onsite reasonably priced. Reliable and cheap public transport within walking distance from the campsite. Great for visits to Paris or Fontainebleau for example. Alongside a canal which you can walk the towpath.

Disliked: Limited leisure facilities. OK for us.

Liked: Fantastic camp site. Amazingly clean as well. Toilets and showers were spotless! Really impressed. The Owners and staff are very friendly, happy to help with any requests. Food and Pizza van on site, ice creams, dessert truck as well. Lots of drinks, beers and more. Had 2 pizzas and chips, everyone enjoyed their food. I would definitely recommend.

Mozart gypsy caravan

Natura non-electric grass pitch

Liked: An excellent site with very helpful owners. Very clean and modern facilities, spacious shady pitches and nice walks along the canal. Easy access to Paris for a day trip from the local station at bagneaux (15 mins walk from site) which took us straight into Paris gare de lyon for 20 euros Inc a one day travel card for metro.

Local attractions

So you know there’s masses to do messing about on the River Loing, but what else is available around La Rivière Dorée? Well, for a start, Fontainebleau Forest (20 minutes’ drive) is climbing-central. Try the kids on bouldering at Rocher Canon (40 minutes’ drive), and progress on to the slightly harder way-marked trails at Apremont (35 minutes) Hiking families, grab your walking boots and set out into Fontainebleau Forest with a picnic. See how the kids cope with an hour’s looped walk through the Gorges de Franchard (45 minutes), or for more testing routes, try out the Circuit des 25 Bosses in the Massif des Trois Pignons (40 minutes). Back at home base, keen cyclists have direct access to the Scandibérique cycle path, which runs alongside the campsite on its epic 1,700-kilometre journey from Trondheim in Norway to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. For a dig into local culture, visit the ornate apartments restored by Napoleon at the stately Château de Fontainebleau (25 minutes), where you can also wander romantic formal gardens, or tour the Gothic-style chapels and the modern-art museum at romantic riverside Château de Nemours (10 minutes).
