Secluded spots by private lake (added by manager 08 Sep 2022)
Aracdia camping
Stunning sunset over the lake
Safari tent sleeps 6

  • Lakeside glamping at a 60-acre site 10 minutes' drive from Wrexham
  • Chester, Llangollen and three golf courses within a half-hour drive
  • Fishing lake; café and licensed bar with background music on site
Finding a secluded spot surrounded by mature woodlands in north Wales is a fine idea in itself – but it gets even better here if you’re into your fishing. And that’s because Commonwood Leisure has 10 lakes around its 60-acre site, catering for everyone from kids and beginners to pros (who may like to wrestle with the 60-pound whopper that lives in the catfish lake…) It’s all set up to be as straightforward as possible at this well-maintained park: the glamping tents are set up either by a one-acre lake or in a family area away from the water's edge. Wherever you stay you'll get a private fishing peg for each tent (plus a private toilet and parking space). Not fussed by fishing? This lakeside setting should be pretty splendid for you too: there’s plenty of space to relax by the water, taking in the views and lighting up a barbecue or firepit for warm evenings. Getting out and about should be straightforward as well: the site is five minutes’ drive from the village of Holt (for pubs, cafés and an excellent farm shop) and 10 minutes from the centre of Wrexham. On site, there is a café and bar (open at select times on Friday evenings and weekends during low season). The café serves up tasty food and the licensed bar has background music. Around the site, there are indoor and outdoor seating areas and plenty of areas to walk (a plus for dog owners, as the site's dog-friendly). If walking’s not such a hit with the kids, they can get stuck into rural life by spending some time with the herd of friendly pygmy goats on site (even friendlier, rumour has it, if you grab a pack of ginger biscuits from the café to feed them with…)

Madoc Lake non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Superb dry pitches by a lake. The sheltered bar area was a god send in October and the staff were so welcoming we stayed much longer than we had planned. Big shout out to the guy who made us 2 large pizza's and chips late on, they were well beyond our expectations. Enjoyed walking our dog around the lakes and a cold night by the lake watching the stars and keeping a large waterside fire going.

Disliked: no dislikes from us at all.

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: It was lovely view of the lake, really gorgeous setting and dead quiet. Lovely fishing area.

Disliked: It was shame that through the week there is no cafe or bar, open only on weekends. It doesn’t mention that on pitchup for the winter break (All it says is it’s open from January to December). Only found out when we got there otherwise I wouldn’t have booked it through the week. The bins are a bit far away from the pitches, maybe could do with a few round the site. The toilet block is clean but needs work to it. It is a bit unfinished on the inside. If it was busy on that pitch itself you would struggle with the toilets because there is only 2 toilets and 1 shower for both men’s and women’s.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are please that you enjoyed our site. We have asked Pitch Up to change it to say that the cafe/bar is only open at weekends as we are unable to change it ourselves. It does state it on our website and facebook page. There are two showers and two toilets by the lake, there is another toilet/shower block near the entrance. We do not have bins further up the site as there are some guests that do not recycle, it makes it easier for recycling to have them by the cabin Thank you :-)

Fishing Canal electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Peace and quiet

Disliked: The shower block as very cold and not very clean

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We do clean the shower block regularly and hope that guests leave it as they would like to find it unfortunately this is not the case. This time of year we are in winter hours therefore we are only open Friday 4-8 Saturday 9-8 and Sunday 9-2, during the weekdays we do run on limited staff, so if you found that less staff meant we did not seem to care then we apologise. We now operate winter hours so the site will be a lot quieter.

Madoc Lake non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet, nice lakes,

Disliked: Not much variety in the bar.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, though we are a bit confused as to the not much variety in the bar, it is a site bar not a nightclub bar but has a good selection of spirits, wines, beers and 4 draught pumps plus non alcoholic choices as well as soft drinks snacks crisps.
