  • Ensuite glamping pods in the Scottish Borders countryside
  • Roslin 15 minutes' drive; Edinburgh Castle 40 minutes
  • Surrounded by woodland and farmland; part of a rewilding project
With easy access to the Borders, Lothian and Edinburgh, there's a lot to like about the location of Wilding on a Whim, a small-scale, sustainable glamping site 10 minutes' drive from the village of West Linton. Each of these pods, which are built from Douglas fir, has been built to the site’s specifications, meaning they blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape of rewdilded woodland and farmland and come with lots of comfortable fixtures and fittings. Each pod is ensuite, has a small outdoor terrace area and can sleep up to two adults and two children, making them well-suited to both family holidays and romantic couples' retreats. For an extra charge, dog-friendly accommodation is available too. Wilding on a Whim is in a small Peeblesshire hamlet, also called Whim. This is a very quiet part of the country, but you're still within reach of plenty of amenities in West Linton, where there are cafés, a post office and a small supermarket. There are many excellent places for walks in the surrounding countryside too – Leadburn Community Woodland (five minutes' drive) is a good place to start – and the spectacular Pentland Hills can be reached in about a quarter of an hour by road.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The setting was lovely, with a pleasant little walk close by just as advertised, Great for nature lovers as there were the sounds of birds and sheep all around giving a nice peaceful feel and we also spotted squirrels and a deer outside too. The pod was clean and bed was cosy and comfortable. A welcome gift of milk, eggs and tea things on arrival was a nice touch and most appreciated. We opted not to light a fire but all you needed to do so was provided. It’s a short drive to the station 20 mins where you can catch the Scotrail train to Edinburgh and nearby Dalkeith had plenty of shops and restaurants for food and dining out.

Disliked: Would have preferred a small 2 seater sofa rather than a futon as I don’t find futons comfortable but wouldn’t put me off revisiting.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a lovely review! Sorry to hear the sofa wasn't to your taste, it converts to a bed allowing us to accommodate families with children but I'm so pleased to hear it wouldn't put you off of coming to visit again! Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Brilliantly appointed pod in a great location. We loved staying here for two nights and the location was perfect for a trip to Glentress. The pod was really cleverly appointed with everything four people would need for a few nights stay. The beds were really comfortable and the bathroom perfect with a great shower. Really loved the eggs and also hot drinks and biscuit on arrival too. The seating outside and the picnic tables were great. Would highly recommend.

Disliked: The fire alarm and the toaster did make for a noisy combination

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Less than half an hour from Scotland's capital and yet this place felt a world away. We loved the tranquility, beauty of the surrounding woods and the work Colin and Katie are doing to restore the indigenous ecosystem here. The pod was clean and cosy, even though it was February. We had all the information we needed, but also felt our hosts were available and helpful if we needed them.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write your review Julian. We hope that you will join us again in one of the other magical seasons that we have here in the Borders of Scotland. Very best wishes, Colin Wilding on a Whim

Local attractions

History and heritage are abundant in this part of the world, whether you’re heading to the village of Roslin (15 minutes' drive) to see its castle and far-famed Rosslyn Chapel, to the parkland and ornate interiors of Old Penicuik House (15 minutes) or into Edinburgh city centre (40 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more monuments, museums and galleries than you could shake a stick at – plus, of course, must-see landmarks like Edinburgh Castle. The Lothian coast is also within easy reach about 40 minutes' drive away to the north, including popular seaside spots such as Musselburgh (40 minutes), Prestonpans (40 minutes), South Queensferry (45 minutes), Aberlady (45 minutes) and, slightly further afield, the gorgeous historic resort of North Berwick (an hour). For fresh air and exercise, take your tackle to the Rosebery Reservoir Fishery (20 minutes), tee off at one of several local golf courses, such as Glencorse Golf Club (15 minutes), bring your wellies and try clay pigeon shooting at Don Coyote Outdoor Centre (15 minutes) or practise your skiing on the artificial slope at Midlothian Snowsports Centre (20 minutes).
