  • Cosy eco-friendly shepherd's hut on a Wiltshire working farm
  • Salisbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within a half-hour drive
  • Barbecue, firepit and picnic table provided
Days out rambling on rural footpaths or taking in famed local attractions, swinging home via the village pub and then back to a cosy shepherd’s hut back at base – that may well be the dream for your Wiltshire break. And it's also real life at Marshwood Farm, a petite glamping site on a working sheep/arable farm surrounded by the ancient woods, hills and gorgeous rural views of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The little village of Dinton (home to the pub and a small café) is a mile away and there are plenty of footpaths and cycleways to roam along in the surrounds. Spend your entire break taking in the scenery if you wish, but there’s also a lengthy ticklist of other attractions within easy reach – Salisbury’s 20 minutes away by car, and the site’s also within a half-hour drive of Stonehenge, Shaftesbury, Stourhead and Longleat. Back at the farm, all efforts have been made to keep things eco friendly: lighting and a socket are fed with solar power, and there’s an exclusive-use compost loo just next to the hut. Bring along whatever supplies you want to cook meals on the camp stove or barbecue provided, then cuddle up next to the firepit or get the woodburning stove going for a cosy time in the hut.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We were staying with my brother and his family. The host assigned us adjoining pitches which was perfect. Plenty of safe space for the children to play. A super quiet site so getting children off to sleep wasn’t an issue. Stunning setting and great facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic on-site facilities with lovely attention to detail. All immaculately clean and well maintained. The surroundings were so beautiful and peaceful. A lovely little site, already discussing when we can book to come again!

Disliked: A fairly long walk to the loo.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Thoughtfully stocked honesty shop. Pristine hot showers and toilets ( with paper towels, hand soap and loo roll). Super barn with local info, kitchen, 2 washing up sinks (fully stocked), fridge and freezer and both indoor and covered outdoor seating. Nicely spaced pitches with parking very near but keeping the field car free so children can roam safely. Immaculately kept field. Owls, bats, a nightjar (to our delight) and lots of sheep. Also nearby church bell practice one evening. Lovely view and amazing dark skies. Table tennis table with bats/balls. Hens and eggs. Ice cream freezer. Ash bucket. BBQs and firepits to hire with bagged fuel. Really everything here is so well thought through and clean! Thank you!

Disliked: Nothing at all. There are some good area walks and we thought it would be a great hiking base and wondered if an airing/drying space for wet weather clothing might be a good addition giving the luxury of dry next day gear and boots. Although being spoiled campers with the barn facilities it is all pretty amazing anyway.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The well appointed utility barn, stunning views, small scale, peace and quiet, generous pitches, good value, stars at night

Disliked: Nothing really! Think about which pitch you want. Pitch 1 is closer to the toilets, but more people walk past you

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The space this is the second year we have been and we just love the space that we get. We congregate as a family with people coming from Cornwall, wales London and Kent so perfect middle spot for all. The indoor space is amazing for those wetter days which we definitely had but didn’t stop the fun.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is a lovely campsite. There are 6 grass pitches and 3 bell tents, with lots of room for the kids to play. The facilities far exceed what you'd expect from a site this size. The 'barn' (a purpose built block that fits well into the landscape) is incredibly well stocked, including with fresh eggs from the hens. Warm showers and clean facilities. There were fire pits and bbqs to hire, with logs and briquettes to purchase. We'll be back! A very picturesque spot close to Stonehenge, the New Forest and the South coast. Loads to do in the very immediate area too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: the campsite has loads of facilities and it’s undersold on the website! There’s a huge facilities but which has a microwave, hob, 2 clean clean showers 4 flushing toilets which are spotless, fridge, freezers, two washing sinks. honestly no need to over pack! Catherine comes in and cleans it too! However it’s absolutely spotless anyway! the space you’re given for your pitch is massive and you’re not sitting on top of other guests and very rarely see other guests :) Absolutely amazing experience and will be going back next year for the solstice :) thanks!

Local attractions

Start with a stroll around Salisbury (20 minutes’ drive), looking out for ancient half-timbered buildings and gazing upwards at the cathedral’s spire (famed for being England’s tallest at a whopping 123 metres). A little out of town, ponder how prehistoric people managed to set up Stonehenge (15 minutes) or wander around Wilton House (15 minutes), keeping an eye out for the fab Palladian river bridge as you roam the gardens. There are more gorgeous old buildings to be seen in Shaftesbury (25 minutes), whose cobbled Gold Hill will be familiar to guests of a certain vintage from a well-known bread-based TV advert. Rather grander is the setup at Stourhead (25 minutes), a National Trust estate that sprawls out to 1,000 acres, with all sorts of follies hidden in its midst. If you’ve not had your fill of fancy pads yet, there’s yet another fine mansion at Longleat (half an hour); if that’s enough of that for now, swerve instead to the estate’s safari park to see big cats, elephants and all sorts of other exotic beasts.
