  • Near Drusillas Park, Knock Hatch Adventure Park and the South Downs
‘Fantastic’, ‘amazing, ‘beautiful countryside’, ‘lovely location’, ‘A little slice of tranquillity hidden away in the East-Sussex countryside’… book a break at Hale Farm Campsite to add your own experience of this lovely little place in England’s south east. Both site and surroundings come in for excellent accolades from former guests: the site's green, peaceful and family-friendly setting, and the location on the Weald Way at the head of the Cuckmere Valley. There’s easy access from here to the South Downs National Park, High Weald and the coast to explore by car, bike or on foot… or you could cart the kids to Drusillas Park 15 minutes’ drive away, or to the coast at Brighton and Hastings within 45 minutes. The farm is five minutes’ drive from Chiddingly, within walking distance of a village shop and two recommended pubs. Guests of all ages are most welcome to meet the Hale Farm donkeys, pedigree flocks of Lleyn and Ryeland sheep, pygmy goats, ponies, free-range chickens, geese and ducks, all of whom can be greeted and fed daily. As a working farm, fresh eggs and home-produced sausages and bacon are also available to buy… and yes, campfires are allowed. The site has a spacious accommodation field with no set pitches, alongside well-kept amenities of hot showers and compost toilets. And the final, excellent, little touch? The friendly Hale Farm owner visits pitches every day with logs, kindling and barbecue packs for sale – you might see that as worthy of a glowing review or two too…

Liked: This is one of the best campsites we've ever stayed in. It's in such a beautiful quiet spot, very spacious plots, surrounded by fields, and walking distance on footpaths to pubs (the lovely gastropub the Gun in GunHill and the Six Bells in Chiddingly for drinks). Scott was there on hand to provide wood, kindling and delicious sausages for our evening campfire and Ruth kept the on-site facilities lovely and clean. It was great to have a visit from the coffee van in the morning and ice cream van in the afternoon too. Nice to visit their numerous animals in the morning.

Disliked: Nothing to complain about at all really. Only downside was weak 4G signal on the campsite, which was actually a positive since our kids got a break from their IPads, but still 3G to stay connected.

Liked: We loved everything about Hale Farm! We had a really nice stay. All the extras were very welcome, like the fire wood (toasted marshmallows and ate smores most evenings from the campfire!). Gino arrived in his van each morning - made real coffee and we bought ice-creams 😋 The animals are a joy - we pitched close to their areas and they didn't disturb us much. We heard the donkeys each evening around 7pm as it was feeding time. The cockerel crows, but he is in the far distance. Being close to the animals was a reminder of living in the countryside; fantastic! Visited Royal Tunbridge Wells/Bodium Castle/Science & Observatory Centre/Pevensey Bay/Brewhouse Arundel on way home - highly recommend ALL these places! Thku Ruth and Scott

Liked: Yet another great stay at Hale Farm. This was our 4th stay, so you can tell its lovely! Amazing sausages, fresh eggs and the farm to visit in the mornings. We started of as two families, this has now doubled to 4! Facilities are super clean too. We'll be back next year! Thanks Ruth and Scott!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This campsite was lovely for going off grid for a couple of days. The pitches are huge so you can pitch however you like without being on top of any neighbours. Every pitch has a fire pit with Scott bringing around logs and fire kits you can purchase every evening which added a lovely aspect to our camping experience. Scott was very helpful and showed us how to set up and light our campfire as it was our first time. We loved being able to go and visit the farm animals each morning.

Disliked: The only downside was the lack of signal on pitch but that’s something that comes with the territory of camping. We managed to get a little bit of signal up in the corner by the toilets.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around here… and that’s just the strolls, hikes and bike rides around the High Weald and the South Downs National Park… This is spectacular wildlife-watching land too, such as at Arlington Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive), for spotting geese, cormorants, grebes and black swans around the waters and from the birdhide. There’s also the hillside around the huge chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington 20 minutes away and spying the inhabitants of the surrounding Cuckmere Valley and nearby Cuckoo Trail. Access the Cuckoo Trail 10 minutes’ drive away at Hailsham for a pedal along its 14-mile route from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. Other options are Blackberry Farm Park (five minutes), the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (10 minutes) and Spring Barn Farm (25 minutes). For arty types, Farley Farm House, home of surrealists Lee Miller and Roland Penrose and visited by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, has its gallery within a few minutes’ drive of the farm. Those with a head for history have plenty to browse around hereabouts too, such as Michelham Priory (10 minutes), Herstmonceux and Lewes castles (both 20 minutes), and vintage rides on the Bluebell Railway, accessed half an hour away in Sheffield Park.
