  • Family-friendly simple pitches two miles from Cromer seafront
  • A 25-minute drive to Blakeney; 35 minutes to Wells-next-the-Sea
  • Relaxed site with dogs, barbecues and campfires all permitted
Touch down in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at Copper Beach Camping, a rural spot a couple of miles from the coast at Cromer (putting its beach, shops and eateries within a 40-minute walk or a five-minute drive). Being on the outskirts of the seaside town is a fine choice – it means you can head down to the beach (or the crazy golf, or the pier, or the cinema) whenever you like, or set out to stroll along one of the woodland walking trails around the site for some great Norfolk fresh air. It’s a properly rural setting here, with friendly dogs and horses on site (and friendly staff too), and a saw mill where you can glimpses of the chainsaw carver in action. It’s all rather relaxed on site at Copper Beach, with barbecues and campfires permitted on the family-friendly pitches and dogs welcome to come along for the ride. On the facilities front there’s a shower and toilet block, along with fresh water taps, a washing machine, washing-up points and bins close to the pitches all around the site. A big marquee is also open for guests to use as a space for reading, eating or playing board games – particularly handy if you'd like to escape a small tent on a rainy day.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It was cheap so can’t expect too much.

Disliked: The site is split by a timber / scrap metal yard that was an eye sore for those in the top field and potentially dangerous for wandering children. Site was virtually full so 3 toilets and 2 showers for well over 100 people staying was insufficient so queuing inevitable.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: I had a lovely one nights stay with my two year old here. The facilities are quite basic which was absolutely fine for us as we are camping after all, shower, toilets and washing up facilities all available. The family that runs it are super friendly and Ben who I believe is the owner definitely makes sure you have everything you need. Whilst we were there over the bank holiday they hosted a big communal bonfire was a great opportunity to catch up with some other campers. We will definitely return.

Disliked: This campsite is a nightmare. Thanks God we spent only one night there. Rubbish everywhere, it looks like recycling centre not like a well maintained campsite. Only one toilet!! The site is huge and there were a lot of people so imagine the queue. Will never go back again.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Small Field and great proximity to Cromer and beach

Disliked: It seemed like they used a horses fields to accommodate extra campers and the horses were put in their stables for the entire warm weekend. Everyone was talking about it. The stables were not cleaned and one horse was regularly banging on the stable door in frustration. It put me off the hosts and I wouldn’t want to revisit in case it meant the horses were shut up again. Some other campers may have informed the RSPCA

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: There was a big bonfire that everyone was invited to. Camp fires are also allowed. There was a burger van on site which offered discounts to campers. The ground was flat with soft grass, so it was great for tents. The location of the site was good - it has nearby bus stops that led to Cromer, and you can start a nice walks from the site too.

Disliked: Arrival was disorganised, there were no marked or assigned pitches so we weren't sure where to go until another camper told us you could pitch wherever you liked. It was a bank holiday weekend and there must have been a good couple of hundred people on site, but only 4 toilets, 2 showers and a portaloo resulting in really long queues. The showers were cold and the water pressure was just a dribble. It was really loud at night, lots of drunk people shouting and swearing until the early hours making it hard to sleep, so not ideal if you have kids. Some bins were marked e.g. glass. but not very clearly, and most weren't marked at all so all the rubbish gets mixed up making it hard to recycle. There's also nowhere to empty chemical toilets from campervans so we saw people just dumping it into bushes. Lots of farm machinery and scrap metal around which children could get hurt on, it just doesn't feel like a family friendly site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good location and having our own campfire.

Disliked: Terribly overbooked. Tents and cars were on top of each other. We spent quite some time to find a small spot and the late comers were not even as lucky as us. Lack of sufficient facilities meant long queues all the time. Because they have no time limit for check-in/out (actually not any kind of rule) some people got in with their cars and put up their tents in the late evening, even midnight. One of them left their truck engine running for 15 minutes with headlights on. Obviously no staff was around to take notice of this; they let the cars in and don't bother about the rest. Both nights we stayed, there was lots of noise until early morning. We didn't bother to try to find someone to tell these problems the next day as we were leaving and there seemed no point in it. The big bonfire could be nice but was too close to the tents and seemed like it was mostly for getting rid of the junk around.

Local attractions

The seaside town of Cromer is packed with things to do: along the beach there’s plenty of space for sandcastle-building, swimming and various watersports, and there’s a section just to the east of the pier that’s popular with surfers. Speaking of the pier, it’s a splendid place for a stroll, an afternoon of fishing or crabbing, or some live entertainment at the Pavilion Theatre. Cromer’s likely to take up a fair bit of your time while you’re here but if you fancy branching out there are plenty of walks in the local area (try the gardens at Felbrigg Hall, a mile and a half away), or you could head out to see the seals at Blakeney (25 minutes’ drive) or the colourful beach huts at Wells-next-the-Sea (35 minutes). For a different day out, there are lots of exotic beasts to meet at Amazona Zoo (five minutes), a South America-themed animal park that’s home to flamingos, monkeys and pumas. Another good option is the chance to step back in time with a ride on the North Norfolk Railway (10 minutes), whose heritage trains run through some of the finest coastal scenery Norfolk has to offer.
