  • Peaceful, pop-up meadow site in North Norfolk countryside near Holt
  • A 15-minute drive to Cromer beach; 20 minutes to Blickling Estate
  • Powered by solar energy; shower and loo block; pubs and shops nearby
A pop-up campsite run by Becky and David on part of their family’s farm, Apple Tree Farm Campsite is situated between Holt and Sheringham in lovely North Norfolk countryside. With a peaceful setting among arable fields, the camping pitches have gorgeous views and dark skies, so you might well get a chance to spot the Milky Way glittering above on clear nights. There are lots of cycle routes and footpaths accessible from the farm, and as the beach is probably top of the kids’ to-do list, a short car journey sees you at the east-coast seaside towns of Sheringham (10 minutes’ drive) and Cromer (15 minutes). On site, you are free to have a campfire or barbecue to cosy up around, but they must be off the ground to avoid damaging the grass. There are plenty of local pubs if you’re having a break from cooking, and you can pick up supplies in Holt (10 minutes), where there are also a raft of takeaways. The site is powered by energy generated from the owners’ solar farm, and amenities include well-equipped bathrooms with flushing loos and hot showers, a cold-water sink for washing up and access to a phone-charging station if you need to stay in touch with home.

Local attractions

Sheringham (10 minutes’ drive) may well be top of the list in the beach stakes, with plenty of good old-fashioned bucket-and-spade fun to be had with the kids. Or how about eating fish and chips on the traditional pier at Cromer (15 minutes) or chancing your hand in the amusement arcades that dot the town’s prom? Tread in the ill-fated footsteps of Anne Boleyn at National Trust-owned Blickling Estate (20 minutes), the magnificent estate where she was born in 1501, and if you want to introduce the kids to some living history, pick up a leaflet from the tourist information office in Holt (10 minutes) and follow the Owl Trail around the Georgian town. You can find a myriad of footpaths and cycle trails around the area, from family beachside tramps among dunes to the rather-more-challenging, off-road Peddars Way trail, with bumpy tracks and some steep climbs.
