  • Peaceful adults-only motorhome aire on a Cambridgeshire smallholding
  • Ely Cathedral 20 minutes’ drive and Cambridge colleges 55 minutes
  • Farm animals on site; pub, bistro and supermarket five minutes’ drive
When you’re longing for wide-open spaces and big skies, a stopover at Bedinghams Farm, five minutes’ drive from the historic village of Sutton, might well be the order of the day. This family-run working smallholding is set in the stunning fenland landscapes, has far-reaching views over Cambridgeshire countryside and farmland, and offers just a few adults-only, spacious and level grass pitches for motorhomes. There’s lots to see and do on site. You’re always welcome to wander over to the farm for a meet-and-greet with all the animals – which include Dexter cattle, Soay and Texel sheep (with bouncy lambs in spring) and rare Oxford Sandy and Black pigs as well as free-range chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Dogs are welcome on the camping field, and you can exercise them with an amble through the pond-side orchards or around the tree-lined perimeter walk. Keep your eyes peeled for shy deer and other wildlife by day, and look out for spectacular sunsets on cloudless evenings. There’s a small supermarket in Sutton if you’re up for self-catering, plus a pub and bistro (the latter with a pizza takeaway service) if you’d rather someone else did the cooking for you. .

Local attractions

Tick a bucket-list site off with a visit to spectacular Ely Cathedral (20 minutes’ drive) to see the ornate stone carvings in the Lady Chapel and admire views over the fens from the top of the West Tower. Learn more about fenland heritage at Ely Museum, housed in a former jail, or tour the carefully renovated Victorian mill and schoolroom at Burwell Museum and Windmill (40 minutes). A trip to Cambridge (55 minutes) may also be on the cards for a nose around ancient seats of learning like Kings and Jesus colleges; there are also ancient Egyptian artefacts to check out at the Fitzwilliam Museum, and modern-art exhibitions at Kettle’s Yard. If you’d rather be out in the fresh air, birders should take binoculars to the marshland hides at RSPB Ouse Washes Nature Reserve (half an hour), where herons, merlins and overwintering waterfowl are often spotted. If you fancy messing about on the fenland waterways, head for Brandon Creek (35 minutes) to hire a cruiser or a narrowboat for the day.
