Campsite

  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet location.

Disliked: Road leading up to the site was a surprise, very tight and steep and we arrived in the dark. Also found a piece of glass in my pizza. I should have mentioned something at the time but as a one off it was ok, just concerned for other pizza purchasers.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. I would like to assure you that we have taken this very seriously and want to ensure the safety and comfort of all our guests. We do not use or store any glass near our food preparation areas and strive to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and safety in our kitchen. I immediately on reading this have carried out an investigation and have reviewed all control measures within the kitchen ensuring they are robust. We have never encountered a situation like this before and cannot explain how it could have happened . I have also contacted our supplier and informed them. Thank you for letting us know - we are sorry for any inconvenience. The road to the site is being updated over the winter.

Liked: Clean ,toilet shower block clean and new ,all amenities, kept up together ,

Disliked: Only gripe shop opening hours are not kept too,so don’t bank on it for anything 👍🏻and could not buy Wi-Fi code as the guy couldn’t find them ,but you can get a signal so wasn’t end of world🤗

From the manager: Hi Mark, thank you for your feedback, it has been most helpful. It has made me realise that although we advertise reduced low season opening hours on the door, our check in leaflet does not show the new times. We will ensure we update the information on the leaflets to reflect the low season times as I can appreciate this is irritating - thanks for letting me know. The guy who couldn't find the wi-fi codes is my husband - you would think he would know where they are - I will tell him for the one millionth time in the hope it will finally sink in!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Loved the site. Very peaceful with a relaxed atmosphere. Warm welcome when we arrived We had pre ordered some pizzas which were brought to the van while we were setting up which was such a welcoming touch, especially after a long drive. The facilities were immaculate. Loved that we could cook on the fire outside We had lots of fabulous walks in the area. The local town was great. Plenty of shops and a few pubs and cafes.

Disliked: The steep rough road up to the site was a bit hairy ! The showers could do with a shelf and the washing up area either more bowls or plugs in the sink so you don’t have to use too much water

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback! The track will be done before next year - finally! Having got your feedback I have checked the bowls in the sinks and see that all but one have "disappeared" - I will replace them - thanks for the heads-up - I had not noticed. I am pleased that you had a great stay and hope to welcome you back!

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
