  • Family site on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s second-largest city
  • Museums, galleries and famous raceway within 15-minute drive
  • Experience spectacular African sunsets next to the lily ponds
When you think of Southern Comfort, you probably think of warmth, sweetness and a hint of spice. At Southern Comfort Lodge, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Bulawayo in Matableland, you get all of that without the hangover… Southern Comfort Lodge is in that sweet spot between urban and rural, close enough to the centre of the ‘city of kings’ to be handy for shops, museums and restaurants, and far enough out in the ‘burbs for the peace and quiet to be broken only by birdsong. You can spend your days mooching around the city, visiting museums and galleries, before scurrying back to the site to cool off in the pool, watch a typically stunning African sunset, and take in the views of the lily ponds from the patio. When the hunger kicks in, head to the on-site restaurant for some munch or get to grilling at one of the braai stands dotted around the site, then chill out next to the firepit. If you’d prefer to try something different, there are plenty of restaurants to test out within 15 minutes of Southern Comfort Lodge.

Local attractions

You won’t have to go far from Southern Comfort Lodge to fill up your days: head in to Bulawayo for the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre, National Gallery and Natural History Museum, and for the highly recommended Railway Museum and its working steam train. Time your visit right and you might be lucky enough to catch a race (perhaps the famous three-hour endurance race?) at the Breedon Everard Raceway – otherwise opt for something a little less high-octane with a civilised afternoon tea at Nesbitt Castle, built in the 1920s in the style of medieval European castles, or a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Khami Ruins. For a taste of the local wildlife (no, not literally) you have tons of options: sign up for a tour of Matobo National Park for some rhino (and balancing rocks) spotting, go on safari with ThisandThat (10 minutes from site), or take it into your own hands with visits to Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage or Tshabalala Game Sanctuary. You can explore Tshabalala on horseback, getting you even closer to the giraffes, zebra and impalas that roam through it... Further afield, head to Diana’s Pool for a peaceful and natural dip (check in at the caretaker’s cottage on the way) or try out some angling or boating in the largely undeveloped Umzingwane Recreational Park, both just over an hour from Southern Comfort Lodge. If you have the time (and the drive) to take a longer jaunt, the stunning Victoria Falls is a five-hour drive away, and every second is worth it.
