  • Friendly site among hills and woodland overlooking Lake Mutirikwi
  • Half an hour from Masvingo and 10 minutes from Great Zimbabwe
  • Dining room with homemade food, table d'hote and English breakfasts
Handsome woodland, Lake Mutirikwi close by and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Great Zimbabwe within 10 minutes' drive... this Zimbabwe site is a zinger. Flick through the pics to see the smashing setting of Norma Jeane's Lakeview Resort in Zimbabwe's Masvingo Province, set among granite hills and tropical Msasa woodland overlooking Lake Mutirikwi or Lake Kyle. Across the lake are the 17,000 hectares of the Lake Kyle Recreational Park, for fishing, horse riding, hikes and wildlife watching: rhinos, buffalo, zebras, jackals and hawks are among the many species that have their home here. A dining room awaits on site after your return from safari, where the restaurant team dishes up homemade meals and four-course table d'hote dinners (full English breakfasts are also available for those who need their fryups for safari prep). Or retreat at any time to one of the two site bomas to prep your own meals under cover; both have electricity and hot and cold running water. Norma Jeane's is a warm and welcoming site, with modern – and spotless – amenities including flushing toilets, showers, a bath and plenty of hot and cold running water. And if you become just a bit of a mucky pup sightseeing or safari trekking around these scenic lands, basic laundry facilities are available for guests' use free of charge.

Local attractions

To Lake Mutirikwi first, the biggest inland artificial lake in Zimbabwe. Formerly known as Lake Kyle, this is a pretty place to wander around as well as a popular spot for boating, cruises, sailing and waterskiing. Anglers have plenty to pick from too, with bream, bass and sardines among the lake's 20+ species; this is said to be among the best bass fishing in Zimbabwe, so pack your kit if that's your bag. Across from the lake is the Lake Kyle Recreational Park, rightly hailed by Norma Jeane as a must-see destination. Have a guided hike or hack around the park's rocky hills, lake shore, grassland and woodland, or set out in your own vehicle for game viewing and wildlife watching. You'll also need a long look at Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of the ruins of an ancient Iron Age city, and the biggest collection of ruins in Africa south of the Sahara. Although it was abandoned around the 15th century, around 150 structures are still here to see; go along with your camera and prepare to spend some time.
